Comments: Hi Michael. Back in 1992, your nephew, Chris, was a student of mine. He helped connect us, as I had the crazy idea that you might be available to play in my wedding in Minnesota (!). We played phone tag, but you had a commitment in Europe.

I wrote a note through your booking link to see if we can get you out this way. Is 20+ years too late? Maybe. Yet I've learned one thing - if you don't ask, it doesn't happen.

I can find the venue, the funding, and a small number of extrodinary people to put this together. Your call. I'm sending a flair into the Mystery to bring you, and some of the most impactful music that has been in my life, back to Colorado.

Hoping you're well, and know you, and your music are loved by many. Cheers! ~Dan Ostergren.

Comments: Hi Michael.

Been a fan since you were a Minnesota boy. Have long played my own guitar and recently picked up the Uke. I'm searching hard to find the chords for "Miami Beach." It seems like a natural instrument for the song. Where can I find the music?

So glad the early albums are available in the new formats. Keep on keepin'on. I'll be listening with pleasure.

Comments: I am looking forward to coming to your show in Pipestone on January 24th. I have been a fan of your music since I was young, and was also at your performance here in Pipestone 20 years ago. What an anniversary show! It is very seldom we get an entertainer here of your caliber, and truthfully don't think we have had one since the last time you were here!...lol. My girlfriend is driving a distance to come see you. (Well I guess to see me too-) Is there any chance you could sing a song for her, and we could meet you too, as we have been struggling wanting to be together and trying to maintain a long distance relationship with family involved. We love each other very much, and were friends through work a distance apart for many years before trying to be together. Her name is Carla...if there is anything you could do at all that would be great! If not, I understand, welcome to Pipestone and I hope you enjoy your time here. Thank-You.... Mark Lunn

Comments: Hi Michael,
I have been meaning to email you ever since your concert at The Crossings a couple of weeks ago. By the way, that was a wonderful concert and I find every time I attend one of your performances, I smile a lot and find my self in deep appreciation of your artistry and craft.

I promised you I would send you information about a massage therapist that helped me with my hands and shoulders. His name is Jon Thompson and he works out of his home in North Mpls. His phone number is 763-226-6229. Just keep it as a reference.

Thank you for the gift of your newest album...I love every song but especially 'April Fool' and 'Emilo'. So...just keep doing what you are doing. As I said 2 weeks ago, you are a treasure for us all.

With deep regards,
Gary

Comments: Michael... I have been a huge fan since I was 13 years old. I am now 39. I am finally going to have the opportunity to go to a live performance. I'm so looking forward to it. I have my tickets for March 7th, in Rochester NY. For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to sing with you. If you could indulge me with 5 minutes of your time that day, I would be happy to learn the harmony to any song you choose. You have no idea how much this would mean to me. I have been singing for my whole life, and have some pretty decent skills. I even won the American Idol Experience at Disney World. I'm not asking to intrude on your performance, only for a few minutes of down time off the stage. I'm not even asking for anyone to hear it, just for an amazing memory... I would guess you are a very busy man, and I know this is a long shot, but ... If you try nothing, expect nothing to happen, right?

All my best...
Jennifer

Comments: I was going through your photos on your website while playing your music here at home and I found this beautiful embedded piece sung by Salli Terri, "Bachianas Brazileiras No. 5 of Villa Lobos. In fact, when I clicked onto your "More Photos" page I was wondering where it was coming from because I was actually listening to & getting lost in "Savin' It Up" when it came on. But when I located it and listened I just loved it. Such a lovely Brazillian/Spanish guitar alongside such a lovely & delicate voice. Thank you for sharing. I for one enjoyed it. This pretty much signals me to get out my Julian Bream CDs and other music from the Medieval & Baroque period. May God bless and enrich you and your family and have a wonderful Christmas & New Year holiday season.

Comments: Life time fan of the music, the man. Saw him here in Fairbanks 3 or 4 times, once at the fair where he signed and GAVE me a cd (the very last one). Talk about smitten! At another concert, I requested
'The Good Life', from All You Mad Musicians and he declined. Talk about disenchanted. Still a life time fan..
As I hail from Minnesota, I notice MJ graces venues around the state with regularity. Here in Alaska(since 1984)I am anxiously looking forward to another Alaskan concert. The Great North awaits..

Comments: My husband and I have (and love) all your albums, and our adult son loves your music as well. How we'd all love to see you in San Diego! Our son has four teens, one of whom (Austin) plays a guitar in a band. I just introduced Austin to your music, and he is blown away by your guitar work. His dad showed him a YouTube video of you in concert one day and his jaw kept dropping throughout the video. He was totally amazed at your agility on the guitar. I told him you studied classical guitar in Spain. He's now hooked on your music. We all love Moonlit Deja Vu, by the way. Keep making music!!!!!

Comments: Dear Michael,
I am so happy to have found these recordings I just purchased. They were very important to me as a young man and artist. 1976 a friend Mike Hall in Minneapolis introduced me to your music. Years later I lost the discs, in 1993.(long story how my record collection and I were separated.) I have been rebuilding it and have looked for vinyl copies of your recordings. There is a Breeze and For all you Mad Musicians. I saw your songs on iTunes and from there Google d you and was happy to have found your songs that meant so much to me! Fantastic!
I am still painting and will create once again to your inspiring music. Thank you! My art can be viewed at www.peterklocksien.com I would love to paint a cover for your next CD it would be a dream come true to do that for you.
Best wishes to you from a big fan!!! Peter Klocksien (PETE)

Comments: Michael - we (my wife Kate and I) are excited to hear you will be in Missoula next month - do you remember spending 3 (probably very long for you) days in Wolf Point Montana about 20 years ago? Your time there was one of the highlights of my teaching career and kids still talk about it as well. I retired from the classroom about 11 years ago and moved to western Montana. I teach voice and guitar privately now but it still has its many rewards. I am getting conflicting dates on your performance and i hear you are opening for Mark Chesnutt (should be the other way around). If you get a chance please drop me a line so we know the correct date. We are 100 miles from Missoula but that's an easy drive. Thanks - Doug Trost

Comments: Michael:

I wanted to be one of the first to wish you a Happy Birthday on next
Friday, August 8th. I hope you have a wonderful day. Just remember:
"the older the violin, the sweeter the music." That goes for guitarists and singers too. To borrow the words of your good friend and fellow singer/songwriter/guitarist, John Gorka, from his song: "When You Sing", it goes something like: "When you sing, you make the world a better place; When you sing, you bring us to a state of grace. Do you know the joy you bring? When you sing?" Thanks, John, for stating it so elegantly. Happy birthday, Michael. You are one of a kind. May God bless you and keep you safe on your many travels.

I Facebooked you earlier and I used to do the lighting for Don Williams and you when you opened for him. I still have all your CD's and still listen to them. I went back to school and am now working on my Master's degree! Who would have thought it? Anyway I was just thinking about you and how well you perform on stage, I also have since learned to play the guitar and wanted to learn some of your songs. Myself and a couple of friends play in a local bar about once a month. Hope you're doing well and I miss seeing you perform. Take care, Mark

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the intimate concert in Chatfield. Yours is truly "a gift" shared with your audience and in Fililpino/English we should die when we hear your songs. We enjoyed your song "Bristlecone Pine", but didn't see it on your CD's. I guess there's only so much room on a disc.

Comments: Dear Michael,

I'm a longtime radio personality and played your music first, in 1978/1979 on both KPNW, then KUGN, Eugene, OR. I've lived and worked in Seattle since 1984. My former station, AM 880 KIXI, where I was a DJ for 9 years, still plays "Bluer than Blue." That song is so beautiful, I stop whatever I'm doing in the house when it comes on the radio and just listen. I still have the album it was on. So glad to see you are still performing. I looked at your tour itinerary and didn't see any West Coast dates. There are many wonderful venues in the Seattle area. I think you would love performing at the Edmonds Center for the Arts, Edmonds, WA. I've seen Al Stewart and Christopher Cross there in the past several years. It is wonderful you are still doing what you love. Have a lovely Spring and Summer. Janet Wilson

I just purchased a CD, "The Folkscene Collection, Volume III", JUST to get your version of "Ghost in This House". You did not disappoint - love your version of this classic by Hugh Prestwood. Hard to decide if I like your version better or that of Alison Krauss. They are both so good!!! Maybe you two could do another duet like that one you did of "Whenever I Call You Friend". lol. Anyway, thanks for the music!!! You are a music great, just like the late, great Pete Seeger. You are a legend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a powerful emotion. Thank you for contributing your talent to "Somewhere Up in Bismarck" and "Moon River" - it was absolutely beautiful

It was announced today that a very popular singer/songwriter will be going on a world tour in 2014. I checked out the price of tickets for his show and saw that the price ranges anywhere form $399.00 to $799.00 a ticket, depending on where you sit. And I was thinking to myself: that I'd rather see and hear you perform than almost anyone else. Your humor, your humble spirit, your immense talent both as a musician and as a singer - it all adds up to one very, very talented artist. May God bless you and yours in this holiday season. Here is wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year. Thank you for the music! I truly listen to your songs ALL OF THE TIME!!!! Best medicine EVER!!!

Comments: Michael, enjoyed a great show at the Crossings in Zumbrota last Saturday night. Thank you for the heart-felt music and delightful banter, even from your "Flemish friend".

As I said when meeting you downstairs before the performance, I have been following your music since the mid-70's when my sister gave me your first album. The classical-folk style really appealed to me, and I was hooked. And your music ministers to my soul on a regular basis.

We will try to see you again, for another performance.

Comments: Michael: Question: At the Indy acoustic cafe show that you performed on Saturday, November 16th, you sang a song that I cannot find anywhere. I really don't know how to go about finding it because I am unsure of the title. I have never heard it before, and if you google: "I am so lonely", you get all sorts of song lyrics, but not of that particular song. In the song, it mentioned the songwriter of "Amazing Grace" and how he felt on the slave ship that he was on one night, shouting out "I am so lonely" and the slaves below answered, "We are too". That's what I remember. It was a very compelling song. What is the title please? Great performance by the way. Please come back to Charleston, WV soon!

Last year December, My lover was cheating on me and was not also give me the attention that a man should give to a woman,And really that was troubling my mind and tearing my heart apart to the extent that i was not concentrating in the office the way i use to before the break up by my lover. And before that incident,I always see how my boss use to love his wife so much. I was binging to think that i was not doing the right thing to him that will make him love me forever,So i really gathered my courage and went to my boss wife office to ask her the secret that made her husband love her so dearly,In the first place she refused in telling me,She asked me why i am asking her such a question,That if is it not normal for every man to love his wife.I told her the reason that made me ask her about this question,That my lover started cheating on me lately,When i knelt down before her for her to see my seriousness in this issue that i went to ask her,She opened up to me by telling me that i should not tell anybody about what she want to tell me,The wife to my boss started to say to me that she used a very powerful spell on his husband to love her,And the spell that she used is harmless, But the spell is just to make him love her and never to look for any other woman except her. I QUICKLY ASK HER HOW DID SHE GET TO KNOW THIS GREAT,POWER,DURABLE AND PERFECT WORK SPELL CASTER,she said that a friend of hers also introduce her to him. Then i also ask her how i can meet with this spell caster.SHE SAID EVERYTHING TO ME,THAT THE NAME OF THIS SPELL CASTER IS Dr. DAHIRU TEMPLE. My next question to her was how can i get this wonderful spell caster,She said she is going to give me the email of the spell caster for me to contact him for my problem,Really she gave to me this spell caster email and i contacted him and explained all to him,And after every thing that needed to be done by the spell caster, In the next two days, My lover that hated me so much came to house begging for forgiveness and i was so glad that i have finally gotten my heart desire..I was so grateful to this spell caster for what he has done for my life.. So i made a promise to him that i will always continue telling the world about his wonderful work towards me and also to other that came to you before and also the people that will also get to you from my story that i narrated online now.. I will want to say to the entire world that you should not cry over noting again, That there is a great man that has been helping individuals to restore there Joy and smile in there faces !! The direct email to get this man is : arewaspecialisttemple@yahoo.com This is what i want to tell you all out there,That is thinking that all hope is lost ok..Thanks

You were fabulous!!

You still have your sense of humor. You're still HOT!

For a time, after college, I listened to your albums all-the-time. They carried me. Thank you!

For those of us, with no talent...what you have, "is a gift". Seriously.

I had a wonderful time hearing you in Indianapolis this evening.

I hope your life is happy and contented. You've brought much to me over the years. It was a pleasant walk down memory lane.

Thank you.

Lori

Is there any correlation between Looking For Rainbows and Two Ships That past In The Moonlight. thought it could be about you with a change in the ending thinking it would finish better if you said you were the child born. Hope you could answer this but understand if you can't.

I have an album request for your next album: How about a remake of
"Always" that you did with Roberto Bianco, only you sing and play alone - so it would only be you! Not to dismiss his talent in any way - I just would love to hear your version of those songs. And your kids are right - you are an "Artist" in the truest sense of the word. And a pretty nice guy too. I finally got to read all of those articles that you wrote on "The Solo Performer" for the "Performing Songwriter". Very informative. I love your sense of humor. You make learning fun. Keep on keeping on - your fans (me included) appreciate you so very much! Best of luck to you and yours now and in the future.

Really love your music and your "style", especially on the guitar. Would love to see another album (do they still call them that?) come out soon - loved the latest one, "Moonlit Deja Vu". On the next one, would you consider adding the selections of: "Fate of Fireflies", "Oklahoma Stray", "When She Smiles at Him" and and old favorite that I believe you had a hand in writing, but I haven't heard a version of you singing it: "Circus". Also, I believe it's time for a "Then and Now, Part Two" CD, with a newer version of "I Can't Get to You From Here". I like the version on this site better than the one on your old album "Home Free" simply because of the music involved. Your voice is so pure that all you need is the guitar to accompany it. I mean it, and you obviously know it, which is why your concerts are mostly "one on one" and we fans love it that way! But we also need another "Then and Now" album with some of your fans' favorites on it. Although, I must say the song "You Sure Fooled Me" on the "You Can Call Me Blue" album, is fantastic with Tom Snow on the piano. Great song! I believe you could sing anything and make it sound terrific. Hey,that idea that one your fans wrote about you writing an auto- biography sounds like a great idea too. Sign me up for a copy or two. It would make a great gift for someone.

Comments: Could someone please tell me if there is still going to be a concert
by MJ at the Carnegie Community Arts Center in Somerset, KY, scheduled
for Friday, February 14th, 2014? It is on the schedule on this website, but when I called the telephone number listed on the site, they were seriously lacking in information, and would not let me buy tickets for the concert, saying that this concert had not yet been booked. I'd really like to attend as all of the other concerts are too far away for me. Please someone respond with an answer. It would be greatly appreciated. A fan.

Comments: Michael,

I am very glad to see you are coming to the McMillan theater in my town on Thursday night. As a child in the 70's I loved growing up in the singer-songwriter era of music. You and Paul Davis were early favorites of mine for your wonderful voice and guitar playing. I am very excited that I can see you play live. "Bluer than Blue", "Almost Like Being in Love", and "This Night Won't Last Forever" are three of my all-time favorite recordings from any artist. While not a big country fan, "Give Me Wings" has grown on me, and your duet with Allison Krauss seems better to me than even the original Loggins/Nicks duet. Thank you for a lifetime of beautiful music. I can't wait to see you on Thursday.

A Longtime fan,

Jim

Comments: I am enjoying listening to a revival of sorts of your music. Have to excuse my "ignorance". I missed a lot of your music while I was raising my two boys, but I am making up for it now. You are very good - very, very good. I enjoy watching you play guitar on the old videos on this site. I am hoping to attend one of your upcoming concerts perhaps. Missed the one in Charleston, WV last January. Looks like Sommerset, KY is my best bet on Feb. 14. Would you ever, ever consider doing an autobiography of your life? You know, you just hire a ghost writer, tell them everything from A-Z, and presto, you have a book! I'm sure dedicated fans would love reading about the exciting life you have led. Please consider it. As I stated in another section of this website, John Denver wrote one, and he didn't even study guitar in Spain! Please consider it - you have a gift with words. You have a beautiful voice too. The world is a better place because of you. God bless you and the best of luck in the future. Love the music!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Even then, quite a while before "There is a Breeze" was released, he showed remarkable talent and the ability to communicate strong feeling to his audience.

I was in the front row and taped the whole thing w/a Sony deck. It was magical. Mike stayed at our house and we played around the kitchen table that night. Fortunately, he came back in a few months. Again, in the front row, I taped the whole thing. Sally was with him, not yet married. I was able to follow them to some regional college concerts and taped the sound checks and performances. I still have them, love them, and play them for my guitar students who love acoustic music. Have copies of the vinyls of that time frame. Then have lost touch.

A girl I knew had an extra ticket/backstage access to see you - I think it was at the Tennessee Theatre, and we went. I remember the place was mostly empty, and we were able to get a front row seat. Though there was hardly any folks there, I do remember you putting on a amazing show. You were doing a solo gig, with just your voice, songs, and guitar playing. It was outstanding. After the show I got to meet you backstage, and for a few minutes we spoke. Though the gig was not well attended, I do remember that you seemed as if you just played to a packed house at Yankee Stadium. And, when we met you, you were kind, attentive, and very courteous to both of us. That was over 30yrs ago, one show, 10 minutes, and the kind of impression you made. Thanks.

Comments: Michael,
It meant so much to me to have your new CD. My best friend who was like a mom to me, was very ill and in hospice. Her last few days here on earth I was able to take your CD and play it for her on a CD player the hospice nurse brought me to use. Marcia and I had been to several of your concerts together-she loved all your music, but especially Ponies and The Moon is still over her Shoulder. It was comforting to have your voice in the room. I am hopeful that she could hear the music--I feel as though she could even though there was no outward expression or acknowledgment. I told her it was her own private concert with Michael (she always called you Michael, not using your last name). Thank you. Like always your music is a blessing.

I have been playing your music so much lately, especially my old favorites such as Mad Musicians and There is a Breeze. I have been enjoying your music since about 1978 when I was in high school. I have been to several of your after-Christmas concerts here in MN and each one was special to me. Your sons Leo and Stan are close in age to my daughter, so some of the stories you told during the concerts about your kids made me laugh. I could really relate to them.
My heart has been heavy lately with some family concerns, and your voice just calms me. Thank you so much for sharing your gift with us.
Take care. I hope this finds you in good health.

I attended the Glenwood Springs concert. Went to St. Olaf - let you into the women's gym one Saturday morning. Have been a fan ever since.

Just wanted you to know that your work is as luminous as ever. Probably more so in my mind. I am a musician and photographer. Your songs have followed me into the wilds of many places as I've traveled, a soundtrack to many a photo shoot.

If you ever need images to accompany your work in any way, just ask. You can see some of my photos on mckennaimage.com.

And I have done home concert benefits featuring musicians, including William Ackerman. Would love to talk about possibilities if you're interested.

Rich and I go way back, to college days in Macomb, IL (where I was a big fan of his music then), and I was delighted to hear that he really likes you too. Also, I want to thank you again for recording some more Hugh Prestwood songs - you mentioned that you and he are brothers and that is so true. I like the way you've done all those of his, but "That's That" still blows me away. I'll never forget the first time I heard it - it was one of those pull-off-the-road-and-listen moments. So glad that you did the latest CD and I hope it does well for you!

Comments: Michael. The world needs another "moon is still over". I know you've got the 'stuff', but let me help you write it - no one knows the essence of that song better than I do (you should hear it with my harmony ) or feels it where we do - in the music soul. Plus, I live the song, not just sing it - I've been married to the same crazy, beautiful lady for for 43 years and she is 'still turning my head'. Anyway, I am your 217th biggest fan - any more than that and it gets kinda creepy - good stuff for years, bro - thanks for ALL the creative pleasure. Steve

I would listen to 'Americana', (folk, country, bluegrass, spiritual, mountain music) anything that had essence and ethic. I put myself thru under grad/grad school doing weekend solo acoustic - bought a nice Martin D35 and played songs that I liked and songs that I wrote. Comments: Michael: My wife and I attended your concert this past Fri in Cedar Rapids. It was a birthday present to my wife. Afterwards we waited in line to get your autograph and I asked you a question. I asked if your hands cramped up while you were playing and your response was "yes" and you asked me if I could tell.. I answered "yes" but I meant that NOT in your playing ability (God knows I could not play like that on a good day) but the stretching of your fingers playing the chords so intense. SO what I am saying is I could not detect any problems caused by your cramping in your music. I am sure that it bothers you some. I do some woodworking and I have experienced it also. another subject: Your daughters reconciliation....My wife and I lost our oldest daughter to murder. I cannot express enough how important it is to keep them in your life. when it comes down to it --our family and friends are all that matter in life. Thanks Dennis. We absolutly enjoy your music, and plan on seeing you perform again, maybe in Grand Marias, or somewhere else up there. we like the "coffee house" atmosphere, it is so much more personal.

I don't know how to begin to say thank you. But.....thank you so very much for your music and lyrics. NO one sings or plays like you do. I have been listening to your music since I was about the age you started with music, I guess. I have followed most of your career - by internet. I also have several of your albums. I am so impressed by your technique and deep feelings that flow from your voice. I just can't even believe your guitar skills!!! Thank you for loving music and continuing your studies.

On a side note, I love music, singing, and dance but, haven't excelled in any one area for lack of opportunities and timing of course. C'est ma vie!

Anyway, I hope you'll make plans to play in Minneapolis soon. I so wish I could see you live.

Thank you for your time. Have a pleasant day!

And much(more) success to you,

Comments: I was going through my collection of cassette tapes and found "Michael Johnson, Then and Now" which is filled with many of my favorite songs--not just Michael Johnson songs--but all time favorite songs. Michael performed at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky during the late 1970's when I was a student there. He was great and I became a huge fan of his. I was sitting on the front row with my date, in a cast from my toes to my hips as I was recovering from knee surgery as a result of an intramural football injury. The songs he performed that night and the years that followed have resonated with me for over thirty years. "The Moon is Still Over Her Shoulder", "Give Me Wings", "Bluer Than Blue" and "This Night Won't Last Forever" are all favorites of mine that bring back many wonderful memories each time I sing them to myself or hear them.

Anyway--thank you Michael for the music and the pictures you have painted through your gifts.

Comments: Dear Michael:
We attended your concert in Hopkins last Saturday evening; what a terrific performance. We have been fans of yours since college (late 70s/early 80s) and thank you for providing the soundtrack for both making out and crying our eyes out (sometimes simultaneously!). Having adopted our daughter 5 years ago and having lost Brad's Dad only a couple of weeks ago, songs like "One Mile Apart" and "Kiss Me Goodbye" had us weeping like children. I am sure the couple sitting in front of us thought we were having seizures. Thank you for sharing your talents with us for so many years. Wishing you the continued success you deserve. All the best, Brad & Suzette P.S. How about using adoption as a theme for the next song you write...we'll split the royalties with you.

Comments: Dear Micheal, words can not describe the love I have for you and your built-in-soul-ready-to go-music. When I 1st saw you play it was Wayyyyy.back..at Amazing Grace back in Evanston Il....of 1975. SNL just came on the air the 1st time.
Me and my 3 buddy got to sit at the front row at the lip of the stage. We are looking up at you sitting on your chair just spell bind...My friend had a old mono cradle handle panasonic tape cassette at the lip of the stage and when you were playing (I don't recall the name of the song) the cassette clicked to stop- (OH crap its the END of side A) So you (God love you) pick up on the clicky sound -then you looked down and said to my friend "Ok turn the tape over - I wait" ...which my buddy bee-lined to the recorder and flipped the tape then with a few inches of FWD and hit the record. - You then picked up at the last chord during and carried on with out missing a beat.....Oh this was total Coolness if you could imagine.
Well to say the least -You really become our hero and friend that night...
Now As I move through the years to a youthful 56.
I play about 6 songs of yours and 6 of John Denver to tell the story of both you and your career crossed paths. Because of this - I play for the love of your music an it's neat how folks comment on the art of your craftmanship..It's like having gig-tip engine in my pocked. Any how your music and my career took me into the realm of IT systems support which gave me 2 open heart surgeries due to stress. But rest assure this allows me to recalibrate and unwind with your sweet music on weekends which I now play at local Cafe's. ...So if I may say these words onto you -Please take good care of yourself ..eat your vegtables and please stick around so I can enter the 3 rd act of my life with you at the helm. OK?
AS it is, I will try to make your Hindsdale Il, gig in Feb 2013..
Now -Do you think I could have your autograph to be written on and old worn LP called "There is a Breeze" ? Or is your access to the general public restricted due to security reasons ? If so I understand.. If i can get a Pix of you and my wife this would be great.
When I played "Mov'in in the same circles" on the 3rd date with my guitar. In doing so I got her to marry me and have been since 1981.Not bad considering its a song about breaking up -Eh? So take a bow if you so desire. It's a great timeless tune no doubt.

So allow me to wrap this up by saying thanks and many more for even thinking about playing the next great tune....It's all good my friend.

Please write back if you have a moment to spare...In the meantime, see you at the Hinsdale show :)

Best Regards,

-Gerry-

Comments: Dear Michael -

I just ordered The Early Albums after receiving There is a Breeze just last week and realizing that I also needed For All You Mad Musicians. Your stuff isn't easy to find, so I'm glad I found it on your site.

Both There is a Breeze and For All You Mad Musicians were important albums for me when they came out, such a clear presence, such skill and such a wonderful voice. They've become even more important recently as I've joined the bulk of my friends who are performing artists and started doing some shows with a longtime friend of mine (Stephen Jackman -- you should check him out). I've lost myself in the guitar the last 10 years after being solely a literary artist for decades. After a lifetime of being a musician and a writer and never having the two intersect, I now have a CD's worth of songs I've written and am already writing for a second. And the more important music as become, the larger place it's made for itself in my life, the more I've wanted to hear Pilot Me, Troubled for You, May You Never, There Is Breeze, Study in E Minor. Another friend of mine -- Richard Matoon, a wonderful musician who you should also check out, one of the two people who taught me how to play guitar and showed me stuff I'm still working -- introduced me to your albums and "taught me" a couple of songs, though I wasn't really in a position to really learn them then I'm excited to have all these albums and to revisit the music that is so so good and is music I want to be a part of my changed musical world.

Also, you appeared in Missoula back in the mid-70s -- '75, '76? -- and I was the front desk clerk at the Holiday Inn after what appeared to have been a long day on the road. I remember a VW Bus and no entourage, contrary to the other acts who came into town. I also remember a genuineness and humility that is still memorable.

Best regards,

Scott Davidson

Comments: Hello Michael.
I've been listening to you since the mid-70s and first heard you in Oct. 1975 at North Hennepin Community College in Brooklyn Park, MN. I was a student photographer on the college newspaper and a photo I took of you appeared in the paper that month. You autographed it for me in Dec. 2007 at the Hopkins Center for the Arts. Though I've seen you at Maplewood and Pioneer Place a number of times, I've been waiting for you to return to the Hopkins Center and, now that you are, I am unable to make it that night. The Twin Cities Marathon is the following morning and I have to be there early for it. Bad timing, I guess. I hope you can make it to Hopkins again or Maplewood. I will try to get to the Creek House in New Brighton. Keep up the great music. ___Doug
P.S. Are you living in Minnesota again? Last year you were thinking about moving back to be near your daughter and her family.

Comments: Dear Michael,
I first heard your music in Kansas City in the mid-1980s. It then accompanied me to London where I spent twelve years. Since 2001, I've been in Brazil. I lost your albums in the move back then. Today, I found you on YouTube, and now your site. I cannot tell you how wonderful it is to hear your music again. I know that, as an artist, you might think that I should turn off YouTube and buy your albums again. I would. But they don't sell them here in Brazil. So, please excuse my not having bought your albums again, and for stealing a listen on YouTube. It is a tropical winter evening here, and your music is coming through my computer's speakers as I write. And you have made my day, my week, and all because of YouTube. Thank you for the music, Michael. It composed the score of many cherished memories.
Best wishes,
Ion

Comments: Michael,

I've been a huge fan since 1978. As we grow older certain memories often come to mind but one night in particular stands out for me. It was late November 1979 and the girl I was engaged to at the time was breaking up with me, in my car, in front of her house. She was seeing another guy, unbeknownst to me, so I'm listening to her tell me this all, heartbroken, and in my mind I'm thinking, "She's been lying to me all along." At that very moment your song, 'This Night Won't Last Forever' was playing on the radio and the lyric that says, ".....she's been lying since the day I met her....." came up instantly. I have never forget that moment, that lyric, that time. I intend on coming to see your show in Hopkins, MN this Fall. You are a tremendous talent, Michael. They don't make 'em like you anymore.

Well, I took a little artistic liberty and transformed "Ponies" into "Geese" kinda on the fly... It was hysterical! I think my wife and I found it funnier than she did.

Thank you for all you have given me over the years through your music.

Mom got it for me coz I played the guitar a little, loved John Denver and his music because it was easy to figure out the chords to play and I could sing in his key. Mom said he was a fellow band mate and I would love his music. One listen and I was hooked. I still listen to his music today. I never got to see him live, but I am a huge fan. As a DJ at KQRS, I attended your live broadcasts at Cookhouse Studios on Nicollet Av. Thank you for your music and your kindness ar the airport.

Comments: Mr. Johnson, I was heading home after teaching my photography class and I was listening to you on Mountain Stage. I heard your story about finding your daughter after 41 years...Congrats! I am happy for you! I too have a simular story. I was adopted and I just found my birth-mother three days after I turned 50 this year. Like yours, it was and has been a wonderful reunion. My PI told me that this was thee most successful and joyous reunion she has experienced in over 20 years. I have a half sister and brother. I am the oldest by two years of my brother. Mother and sister live in Virginia (went to visit) and my brother flew over from Texas. It was a grand time. I talk to my mother nearly every morning to see how she is and what she is doing. We have 50 years to get caught up on {: ) !
I just wanted to share my story with you because I know your happiness and excitement on finding those you have been parted from.
Enjoy your daughter and our upcoming holidays!
Sincerely,

Comments: Michael, I doubt that you will remember - it was nearly 40 years - but we met at your concerts at Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield, IL. Since then I've seen LOTS of concerts, but those two evenings in the old union of the college were some of my absolute favorites. Afterward, your kindness and willingness to talk to and listen to the students that hung around after the show raised your caliber in my book. I'm now a singer/storyteller and have been performing for 7 years or so and when I'm on stage, your graciousness to the audience is one of the models I follow in how I treat my audiences. Thanks for the wonderful music and thanks for showing the way!

Two virtuosos (sp)and an audience that really appreciated their skill and artistry. I have Michaels first album with the song Rooty Toot Toot for the Moon and am wondering if there is anywhere that I could record that song for my I-Pod. Looking forward to seeing Michael again on December 28th for his after Christmas concert, Blessings! John Berge

Could you please tell me the name of your song that starts out,"I want a son, someone I can blame for turning grey, etc. I want a girl, dancing 'round the room in pink and blue, etc." I've always loved that song and still listen to it on an old cassette tape I taped on an FM station which was broadcasting your concert that year long ago. we have seen you at orchestra hall, guthrie, dakota. what would you need to make $$ to do a home concert? our house isn't huge but we could fill it with fans of yours from 30+ years
my husband wrote a song that was played at our wedding 31 years ago because of your music, our son is a killer guitarist because my husband taught him your music....so i just thought i would throw that out there
what can we offer you: a place to stay when ever you are in the twin cities, a killer meal: i love to cook, but i don't bake,
a house full of people who know your music and have loved it all through the years. can you tell i'm a fan!!!!
we just got back from the alison krauss concert...one of the best concerts of my life. i have always said that the male angels in heven must sound like michael johnson,,,,the females sound like alison krauss. i've rambled on quite enough.
if you find it at all enticing to do a house concert...

Comments: Hi Michael,

I've enjoyed "rediscovering" your music in recent months, and am especially captured by, "I Can't Get to You From Here", from a video that also featured Leo Kotkee.
A little over a year ago I attended a songwriters symposium in Nashville with a dear college friend, and signed up for Hugh Prestwood's session. He did a fantatstic job and sang, "That's That", for us. Hugh talked very kindly about you, and the great job you did recording the song. I enjoy the live version on Youtube.
I live in a very beautiful part of South Carolina known as the "Low Country". Generally, it's close to Charleston, Beaufort, and Savannah, Ga. How wonderful it would be to have you down here to perform, and I'd be there...that's for sure. I'm so impressed with your ability to play in the "classical" style (in the fetal position.....as you've joked), and sing. Many artists can strum and sing. But you've worked your phrasing to complement your playing style so masterfully. "Get good", and dadgum if you didn't do it!
Thanks for singleheadedly following your musical path in life. You've made many people happy through your artistry. And, I understand you're a pretty nice guy too.

May the good Lord keep you in good health, and bless your family.

Kindest regards, Jim

Comments: Greetings Michael. Despite owning five of your wonderful albums, my wife and I still have never seen you in concert. However, that is about to change as we have booked tickets for your performance at The Crossings in Zumbrota this Saturday, July 8. We will celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary on July 24, and I thought you might like to know that we had selected "Two In Love" as our wedding song back in 1981. If there is any chance you could perform this incredibly beautiful song on Saturday night, I would be forever in your debt. (Note that I am not informing my wife of this request, since I would like it to be a surprise anniversary gift for her - from you and me. Hopefully she won't read your guestbook before Saturday night!) Thank you for sharing your amazing voice and instrumental talents with us throughout all these years.

In addition, we found some old photos of you playing in a club before you were a household name and was wondering if you wanted copies for your own private collection? You should have my email via the webmaster. Thanks, Jessi

Comments: You did a song long ago in the '80's, I think, that starts out, "I want a son; someone I can blame for turning grey, to share my name, to share my day, etc." What is the title of that song? I am merely a serious amateur guitarist who copied the song many years ago and I have done it for friends who love it. It's a great song for old, 'empty nest' parents. I think you do it in "A" with a dropped "D" tuning.

Comments: Hello Mr. Johnson......I was doing some maintenance on my cd collection, and for some reason a song that first introduced your music to me came to mind. I was stationed in Ramstein Germany in 1981......we had just moved into a ground floor unit in base housing, and much to my dismay, I learned my upstairs neighbor liked to play his music (country music) loud....so loud you could hear every word of the music. I am an R & B/jazz girl and needless to say....we had words about the loud music. one afternoon a song he was playing VERY LOUD woke me up from my nap, just as I was getting ready to start banging on the ceiling He played "Rosa Lee"

He played that whole album everyday during his lunch break! LOL! finally I caught him coming out of our housing complex and asked who the artist was,,,,you should have seen the look on his face as he told me it was Michael Johnson. I bought the album and played it so much....HE started to complain! I have been a fan every since.

There is something about your voice....that has made you and Alison Kruss the only two so called country singers in my music collection. Frankly I think your more in the James Taylor catagory, which is why I think I fell so hard for your music,....The pure honest sound....very beautiful. Best Wishes....Your R&B Girl Hope.

I first met you back in Minnesota, back in the late '70's, and then a group of us wanted you so badly to come to Vail.... (you actually played in Minturn, in the old blacksmithing foundry.... Remember?) we stayed in touch via mail for a while, then we met up again in Spokane several years ago when you came into town for a concert.... I visited you downstairs in that greenroom, and we gawked at all the food they made just for you! I am teaching in Seattle these days... Anyway, I would LOVE to reconnect with you buddy.... My e mail is danobeal@aol.com. I hope all is well with you and yours.... My phone number is: (206) 412-3266. I might be nuts putting my number on this thing, especially if you don't remember me.... But I'm hopeful we can touch base again, friend!

Comments: My son had recently been incarcerated for vehicular homicide. It was tragic for everyone. I was at a loss of words...what to write to him to convey my thoughts and also my hopes for the future, eventhough the present was so dismal. I heard your song "This Night Won't Last Forever", on the radio, not for the first time, but with brand new ears. Those lyrics were the majority of my first letter to him and we both held those words close for the duration of his jail time. Somewhat eerily, I heard it on the radio again on the day we went to pick him up after he had served his time. Thank you for your inspirational words, encouragement and obvious sensitivity. You have added so much to the music of my heart. With sincere gratitude, BARB

Comments: Hi Micheal,
For years my ex wife and I have loved your music. Back when we were married we saw most of your concerts in the 80's, i bought most of your lps which i still have. My favorite of yours was recorded at Sound 80 studios... "For All You Mad Musicians"
One day a few summers ago my daughter and i were at the Mpls Art Institutes art fair and as we were walking along i heard that familiar music. i walked over to where it was coming from and there you were playing. Oh the memories.. I called my ex wife and she listened over the phone to you playing.. she cried.. saying Ohhh i wish i had come along. She wasnt feeling well that day and stayed home. My daughter joined me as we watched you play and later she said. Does this guy have any CD's? i told her i got most of your LPs. she quickly raided them and shes got your music on her mp3 player now. Another big fan in the making. She loves Bluer than Blue but also loves the Mad Musicians LP.
Thank you so much for all your wonderful music. Its been an inspiration to me as a musician and keeps me playing as well.

Comments: I just dropped by to say how much I enjoyed the recent videos you posted on your website, especially the ones at the Londonderry Concerts.

I hope to see more of your videos down the road, and I do hope I can one day finally see you in a live show. I see you mainly work in the Minnesota area so more than likely I will have to fly out there. Right now it's just a pipe dream but my fingers are crossed.

I sing used to play piano, but I these days I do it to just get things of my chest, sort of like therapy. There's nothing like a good vocal session and learning new material here at home in the evening. And when my voice gets on track, I gotta tell you it gives me such a good feeling. Some of my favorites vocalist down the line have been the great alto voices like Jo Stafford, Ella Fitzgerald, Karen Carpenter, etc. I just love to hear your baritone voice and watch you play. It's just wonderful. When I have time I try to attend music lectures and get into music throughout history from the medieval to comtemporary. It's very interesting to understand how music has evolved, or deevolved, but that's subjective.

Well, all the best of everything to you and God bless you.

I wanted to ask you to please include, on your next recording, the song with the line "Just because you didn't answer doesn't mean I didn't call". The wording is so true and the guitar work was wonderful!
Your music speaks of honest emotion and touches the heart. Or the funny bone, depending.....

Comments: Michael, The first time I saw you in concert was in about 1976-77. It was at the U of M. I was 17 years old. Your stage was set with 3 guitars, bar stool and a microphone. For over 2 hours I was mesmerized by your lyrics, your guitars and you! I purchased the vinyl "There is a Breeze". When I wanted solice, comfort or to reflect on my life listened to you melodies. It centered me.

32 years later, today, I went to your concert at the Maplewood Community Center. Center section, second row. You had exactly the same appeal. I love your messages, your phenominal talent, and your relaxed stage presence. Thank for the comfort and peace that your music has brought me. As much as I loved the early years,

Comments: My sister and I went to see you perform at Maplewood Community Center tonight. Thank you so much for being so personable and accessible to your fans. You meet a lot of people, I know, but I was the one who shook your hands and looked right into your eyes and said thank you. That sounds kind of weird, but I just really wanted you to know that your music has always helped me. Whether you meant it to or not, it has been an understanding companion to me all of these years. I started listening to it when I was in high school, and now I am fifty one. It has helped me through the death of my parents when I was 16, my years of young motherhood, two divorces and the most recent suicide of my 23 year old son - which leads me to this question I wanted to ask you in person, but knew you were really busy signing autographs. Do you ever write songs for people who pay you to do it? I am asking because ...well...I wondered if you would consider writing a song for my son? He died on my birthday. I know that no matter how I approach a letter to you, it sounds really clumsy, but I am sincere.
I live very near the Maplewood Community Center. I am a teacher on the east side of St. Paul. I wrote a check for my cd's tonight and wrote my phone number on it. I know that this is an extremely long shot, but what do I really have to lose? If you would consider listening to my story or writing a song...well...you can call. I totally understand if you feel this is a ridiculous request, and please forgive me in advance if I am being unrealistic.
Sincerely,
Donna Yu

Comments: Next Friday I'll be part of a group of fans (family and friends) attending your show at the Heyde Center in Chippewa Falls. The chance to see you in concert in such a relatively intimate venue, in my hometown, was not to be missed. Especially because I've missed a number of opportunities over the years -- ironically. I say that because we have met on a couple of occasions, have spoken on the phone, and you might well have listened to some of my songs on a demo (since discovered to have been defective - probably, a whole batch of reproductions were, and I failed to check each and every one of them). The phone calls and the song demo were related, over twenty years ago now, but it was nice of you to take the time to talk with me and offer to give a listen. The meetings were at Keith's offices on Excelsior, and they were brief and mostly introductory -- Me coming in as you were heading out and vice versa. I guess I've sort of lost track of Keith over the past few years -- and I don't know where your relationship with him stands today -- but back when Bluer than Blue was moving up the charts, Keith met with me to discuss my musical career. He was interested, but had his hands totally full with you. What he did was offer the use of the Projects Four address and office as a clearing house for some of my business to give me some leverage and legitimacy -- a fellow with the last name of Berg (if memory serves) was very helpful. Anyway, I've since left music-as-career far behind. However, I now look back fondly on those exciting (and naive) days, and wanted you to know I appreciate your part in the mix of memories. If by chance you're available after the show, I'd be honored to treat you to a glass of whatever (there's actually a decent wine bar in Chippewa Falls these days). Otherwise, as already mentioned, I'm truly looking forward to next Friday evening.
Shalom v'ahavah,
Mark Isaacson
P.S. Come to think of it I met your brother once upon a time when I was a student at Colorado State.

I just would like to say that I very much enjoyed the new videos on your websites featuring you playing in 1982 on Night Times Variety.

Your website is in my favorites menu and I clicked on your website curious to see if there were any changes. I saw the videos, and just cried. They were so beautiful. Your music is true and clear as a bell. So I'm just writing to say thank you.

I hope that I'll get a chance to see you in a live show. I also hope I can get some recordings in the near future, but I've been out of work for quite sometime and I have to prioritize. But once I'm back to work the first purchase will be the 2 CD set "The Early Albums."

Best of wishes and God bless.

Comments: I am so glad to find this site and to see you are still playing. My ex-wife who is from Chicago and was a fan of yours turned me on to you in the very early 1980s (we share a son and we're now good friends). I've often asked her about you because she was sort of the keeper of the Chicago music in our family and she just lost touch with your work-- although she once told me that you had moved into a whole new endeavor. Well anyway, I was telling someone a story about how I used to sing my son to sleep (he is 25 now) Rooty Toot to the Moon and always made myself think that I was singing it to him as sweet as you did (which I'm sure was a lie, but he never seemed to complain). Anyway, I just ordered your early work and I really look forward to reconnecting with it.-- best regards, Joe (I'll share the CD with my ex-wife Nargie-- that whole Chicago period of my life was so rich on the music side. I'm foreever grateful for it.

I would like to ask you if you ever sang in a local place in Saratoge Springs NY called Cafe Lena on a open mike night... that would have been back in the 80's. Cafe Lena gave many people their first break... like Bob Dylan. My first wife backed cookies for Lena just for the open mike nights. I hope all is well with you and Please keep up the great work.

Comments: Michael , I am a long time fan and always felt you were very overlooked.
My wife and I were at a Nancy Griffith concert in Alys Beach Florida , sitting off to the side , next to a couple who turned out to be part of her road crew. As we left , he handed me his card ( Phil Kaufman) and I noted he had done some work for you. I remembered how much I liked your work and especially your covers of Hugh Prestwood songs.

We have a festival here , the Frank Brown songwriters festival , gets a lot of people from Nashberg down . I was operating one night late and one of the operating room crew read me the line up for the festival. Hugh was here playing with the Bluebird crew and I remember thinking ,I wonder if Michael is here too? About 1 am after surgery , I called all over Orange Beach and finally woke Hugh up at the condo where he was staying ( he wasn't amused ) , no luck you weren't here. Any way just a long way of saying it was nice to be reminded of a great musician and start listening to your work again. If you ever get this way , let me know and I probably would like to have a home concert, which I do with some friends occasionally.
Chuck Pyle is out your way , he is a friend and great musician. He comes this way occasionally. A new songwriters ( and performers) festival is popping up along 30A in seaside and I would like to maybe get you down here for that too.
Good luck , keep up the great work.

An old face looms up from the past. North High 1961-62. It fills my heart to the brim to know that you have had such a beautiful life doing what you were born to do.
When Bluer Than Blue came out, I was married and living in Santa Fe, NM and it came on the radio in the car. I pulled over and cried for my old friend and his wonderful voice. It was grouped with other songs and they never named the artists. I told my wife we had to go to the record store and find out. It just had to be you.
Thanks for the High School memories and the "Mike Johnson Trio" time. I am so pleased that if anyone of us was to have such success, it would be you. Kudos and Good For You!

I am a long time fan of yours. I got your album as soon as it came out and i have been playing it ever since. You are so talented. Your amazing voice pleasures every female i have ever played you for and i cannot say that about any other musical artist in my enormous vinyl collection. Babes love you Michael, plain and simple ;-)

Your music is easy going, heartfelt and your lyrics are awesome.
My favorite is "Two in Love" which is playing right now from your LP, on a vintage Thoren's turntable from the 1970's with double Advent speakers (Henry Kloss). Your voice is beautiful with hers.

I felt compelled to say hello after all of these years.

We have three grand kids that keep us on the go all the time. Merrilyn is a Canadian so we have spend a lot of time in western Canada with her family. We travel to Mexico every year and last year we did a 16 day Mediterranean cruises, had a great time.
I talked to Marcia at the 25 class reunion and I said I would call her, but never did.
Anyway, if you have time send me a little note and maybe we can get together some time.I am retired and have lots of time to party.

I've been so looking forward to your Ann Arbor concert, but can't bring myself to go without my mom. We've gone together to the last two concerts you've given there, but she's recently moved out of state. She's been a fan of yours for quite some time, and I grew up listening to your records. I even went to a concert you gave in Lapeer, MI in the 80s, when I was very small. I hope you return again to Michigan, and that I'll be able to come see you. Thank you for putting on such wonderful shows, with such a great atmosphere.

It had been a few years. Thank you for being so present, so funny and honest. I've always loved your song and lyric, playing classics and mixing up surprising treats. Delightful... I was moved by your story of shingles. I cried softly as you spoke of your daughter and now again as I write this. You will meet this week and I am so honored to feel a part of your celebration. Many blessings, friend, as you venture on. A lifetime fan, Mary Weitz

Just an idea: I think it would be great for you to open a "twitter" account to keep in touch with your fan base. This is an easy, cost-free marketing idea that will help connect you to your devotees. Just an idea. Even if you only "tweet" a few times a week, you will be amazed how thankful your fans are to hearing from you. Should take very little time out of your schedule.

Comments: Michael!

Just sitting here on a winter's day...on youtube...listening to your fantastic version of 'I Can't Get To You From Here' that you did on Ch. 2 tv back in the '80s! I HAD NEVER HEARD YOU DO THAT SONG AND IT BLEW ME AWAY!!!!!!! I have several of your lps/cds and for some reason it is not on there or I've been distracted when it was! So...I hunted up the lyrics..Don Gibson...and now am going to learn that song so I can play it with the others of yours I can play...ie. 'Rooty','May Ya Never','Damn It All','On The Road',....etc. I play them w/the E lowered to a D. Love that simple tuning..for the pedal tone. I won't get the guitar part down on this new one...like yours, but it will be passable!

I saw you at Excelsior in the little bar about a year ago. I was the guy who introduced you that night. What fun! Got a real hoot when you looked at me and said..."Thanks, Dad!!" Crowd loved it and so did I...but I don't think I'm old enough to be your dad!!!

Thanks for all you do...and I pray you are back 100% from the heart thing!!

God Loves you and so do we....your many fans.

Jim

PS> If you're ever feeling down, read the comments under the youtube video of "I can't get to you'....what beautiful people are your fans!

Comments: Dear Micheal,
I have always loved to hear you sing and play. During the late 1980's I was separated, by my choice, from my family. I was watching mtv one night and your video of "That's that" came on. By the time the woman in the video placed the hat on the little girl, I was almost in tears. It reminded me of what I had left behind, a wife and a little daughter. I finally came to my senses, moved back home, and got my family back. My wife, Debbie, passed away about seven years ago from complications associated with cancer, but not before giving me two more wonderful children.

I've just recently lost my girl-friend, Lulie, to C.O.P.D who passed away at Thanksgiving. I thought about that song "That's that" and I've been listening to it for the last few days. It has meant so much to me and I thought I would let you know how much I appreciate you and your music.
Sincerely Yours,
Tadd

Comments: Hi, Michael.

I'm very sorry to hear you're not feeling well.

Thought it might pass an idle moment or two if I asked the following question.

I am a young singer/songwriter, intending to make a career out of playing my music for people. Is there any advice you can give that would help me at this early stage in his career? Things you wish you knew way back when?

You have built a following of such avid followers, and such a broad body of respected work, I wonder if there's anything you'd recommend I focus on - whether from the musical, performance, or business sides of things.

I'd welcome any thoughts you might have.

Here's to a speedy recovery!

Comments: I had the great pleasure of working with Michael a decade or two ago. In the early 80's I was Music Director for the Dinah Shore Show - and, as a big fan, managed to get a booking for him on her show. We rehearsed three numbers - including a duet with Dinah - at her house in Malibu - she cooked us lunch btw. and she thoroughly enjoyed their time together. The other day while assembling music for my iPod I decided to include five of his albums and upon re-hearing I once again realized how much Michael's music has been a part of the landscape of my life.
I'll quit before this sounds like a eulogy. But thanks, Michael for the many hours of pleasure your talent has created. Cheers.

After I met you at the Indian cuisine buffet in Nashville. I went home and called my husband to tell him how thrilled I was that I got to meet you. I started singing him your songs to remind him how much he loved your music. Then to play one for him I popped open my one gig MP3 player/flash drive that I'd brought from home. In it I found 168 Amy Jo originals and about 30 of my very favorite songs that I had dropped in there for the flight. Out of 30 songs... 5 of them were yours! I'd say I kind of like your stuff.
Big hugs
Amy Jo

PS Thank you for saying you'd enjoy writing with me someday. It made my day, no week, NO it was the thrill of a lifetime.

Comments: I just want to say thank you. Thank you for your music. Sometimes we can wonder if our lives have mattered, or if we have done anything for the good of mankind. Well, I don't know about anyone else, but you have helped a skinny little red haired girl get through some really trying times. Your music has comforted me, mourned with me, cheered me, and allowed me to really examine life. Maybe you didn't mean for your music to do all of that, but some of the most significant contributions in life are accidental. I lost my mother when I was 16, and your music comforted me...I am now 49 and 3/4 and lost my son to suicide two years ago(on my birthday), I again returned to your music to help me sort and examine things. As I said earlier, even if you didn't mean to - you helped a sister out. I met you twice and always wished I could adequately express my thanks to you...so for a third time, in writing, I again attempt to say, "Thank you." Thank you for helping me out during the course of my life.

Comments: Hey Michael, I remember speaking to you many many years ago after a concert, and your experiences studying in Spain. I am finishing up undergraduate study as a classical guitarist, and have just received acceptances from a horde of fancy (but ridiculously expensive) conservatories in the US. What was your approach to finding a place to study in europe, and what was all that jazz you were telling me about getting help through the US government? Any insight is appreciated. thanks!

Comments: I can't remember the first time I saw Michael perform live, but I do remember pickin' up the lp "There Is A Breeze" & being blown away. While in college (early 70s), when I came to be in charge of our campus newsletter the first thing I did was to book Michael for a campus performance. Not many showed up, but I LOVED every minute of it. ...Jump to a couple of months ago in Fergus Falls & seeing him once again, brought back so many memories & reminded me why, for my money, he's the best. I'm so glad he hasn't faded to "Blue" & become an answer to "whatever happened to..." I've followed his diverse career since the beginning & have never been disappointed. Thanks, Michael & keep tearing down those obstacles & drive on. Oh, yes and please, my friend, knock off the ciggies. I anticipate following you for many years into the future, but you've got to do your part. After all, isn't it about ME (heh, heh). I wish you peace, my brother.

First of all, congratulations on your new grandson! Babies are such a treasure. Enjoy as much time with him as you can get.
Just wanted to let you know that Lugs O. passed away in January at 92 years old. The memorial service was last Saturday--lots of neighbors from the past were there and your name came up a couple of times. It's the end of an era for the neighborhood; Lugs had lived in that house for 51 years.
Thanks for stopping by to see my mom when you were in Minnesota. She is always glad to see you. Drop by again when you're in town.
Greet Stan and Leo, and give the baby a hug. And take care of yourself too. We hope to see you in concert around here soon.

Comments: Dear Michael,
First of all i feel a bit embarrassed that i have never heard any of your other tunes. In 1978 when Bluer then Blue came out it was played quite regularly in New Jersey especially by a radio station called WMGQ in somerset or New Brunswick area of New Jersey. After i broke up with a girl your song would bring tears to my eyes and certainly tugged at my heart strings. The lyrics and Music are absolutely Perfect together and of course i would never want to hear anyone else sing that song but you! Your version with your own backing vocals is superb, to say the very least.I wonder if this song "Bluer Then Blue" was written from a personal loss or perhaps someone that you broke up with along the line? Most of my best songs come from personal feelings and divine inspiration. I'd rather write ten great hits then to fall prey to mediocrity just to write songs. One of my songs "a soldiers song" was recorded in July of 2005 by The United States Army Concert Orchestra "Pershings Own" that plays for the president and dignitaries and heads of state. This piece was inspired by a young 20 year old soldier from Clark New Jersey who was also a classmate of my daughter's. When we got the news that a good kid from clark nj was shot in the neck while attempting to rescue his fellow soldiers that were pinned down, it was too close to home and i had already been working on a tune for what i thought would be a love song. Well it became a different type of love song. One that honors all of our brave men and women that fight for our freedom in these very troubled times. My web site is myspace.com/thomasmezzo and taxi.com/tommezzo where you can hear fully orchestrated pieces that i have finished in the last 5 or 6 years. My latest piece is titled "I have waited just for you". I hope that it finds it's way into a motion picture. Anyhow i just wondered if you wrote the string parts for "Bluer then Blue". They really are a superb arrangement that compliments your singing and playing perfectly! Also was that you playing the Piano in the opening sequence of this wonderful song?
Anyhow I will always love "Bluer then Blue" and admire and respect you as a fellow composer and songwriter for writing this delightful piece.
I wish you and your family all the best of God's good blessings.
Best
Thomas

Comments: Michael,

Hope you are well.

In the early 1970s, you played at a sort of private concert, along with a few other artists, in the ballroom of the student union at what was then called Central Missouri State College. The concert was for student union people from various colleges in the area. I crashed it.

At the time, I thought I'd never seen you before, but I was very impressed by your singing and guitar playing. (I remember that Brewer and Shipley were also there, and maybe Josh White, and a couple of comedians, and I can't remember who else.) I had the opportunity to talk to you afterward, but passed. But if I remembered where I'd seen you before, I would have loved to talk to you. You did a song the Mitchell Trio recorded, "Business Goes on as Usual," and that should have given me a clue.

I wrote a term paper for my U.S. Social History class on the Chad Mitchell Trio. The group is still my favorite all-time group. One day, on Michael Douglas's show, I think, I saw you with John Denver and David Boise, still billed as the Mitchell Trio. I had read that when Mike Kobluk left the group, Mitchell's name could no longer be used. I also read that Denver, Boise, and Johnson recorded one album for Reprise but it was never released. (I've read conflicting things about the trio.)

At any rate, I'm not sure why, after all these years I decided to tell you my little story. But I really regret not talking to you all those years ago. I was also wondering if you ever had any contact with John Denver in the years after the trio disbanded.

Best wishes.

Terry Cooper

It is so great to see how well you look and how well you sound, considering the last couple of years! You have returned to that magnificent continence and voice that I have held so dear in my mind for over 35 years! Listening to you sing with Donna at the studio and getting a chance to fool around on a bass violin with you and also to sing with you just made a sweet night even sweeter. Please, come back to Chicagoland, even if it's just to pass through to another destination. You are sorely missed in this deprived and depraved town! So, remember, always keep your head down when dealing with gun slinging club owners, even if it was just a pearl handled Baretta pea shooter, an experience we both have shared at the same venue!!!!!!

Peace, good fortune and Happy Independence (Inauguration) Day!

I was listening to my vinyl LP of "For All you mad musicians" today. I enjoyed it so much. Something about the vinyl, it just sounds like you were right there in the room. CDs are great, but I love this old album, every song on it is dear in my heart.
I didn't have a record player that worked and then I found this rinky dink record player for $9 at Bargain Seeker. It's not top of the line quality, but you even sound good on my $9 record player.
Hoping your concert in St Cloud on 12-27 (my birthday) goes well. Wish I could be there, but I can't this year. For years I went to your after Christmas concerts in Mpls and I miss those events. They were special to me. I hope you are doing well and that your health is continuing to improve. I think of you often. God bless you, and thanks for the wonderful music.

I have been a fan of yours since 1977, when I was a senior in high school. A dear friend introduced me to your music and your voice and songs have pulled me through many nights. Now that I'm more grown-ed up, your lyrics still make sense to me.
I am now living in Kuwait and read on your website that you will be in Fergus Falls MN next week, and alas, my second opportunity to see you is missed because I'm here!! (My home is 25 miles from Fergus Falls)
Alas, guess that's life!
Anyway, from a long time fan, I am glad that your health is well, glad that you're sounding very, very fine (I just listened to the Musicians Underinsured health podcast) and I hope you enjoy Otter Tail County.
Keep on singing and I'll keep on listening

after 44 yrs in the house, my Mom moved...and you can imagine the amount of...um...stuff? a person (ok, and 3 kids) accumulates in 44 yrs. The stuff she moved twice (up to Duluth and back) was funny -- she never opened the boxes when we moved back in 1971! I was tasked with "getting rid" of various things - including crates and piles of record albums. I was sorting them into "Classical," "Pop/Rock," and "Where did this come from?!" And in this miasma of unadulterated crap I found a gem -- "Dialogue" By Michael Johnson -- the cover disappeared over the years, but someone put it in a plastic protector.

I no longer have a turn-table -- he got that and a bunch of my favorite power tools in the divorce -- but if anyone would appreciate this, please shoot me an email. I'll ship it to anyone who appreciates your music as much as many of us in this great state do.

Just downloaded one of your live albums - great listening in digital!

thx

Comments: Michael, think way back to Boothbay summer of '64, and a few chance meetings in MD and Breck... Are you ever to be performing on the East Coast? Unlike the first time you were here, Frederick is NOW a very active Arts community with many venues for singer-songwriters, poet-writers and artists alike. Being alone now I concentrate my time in jaming with friends (the Martin guitar has been put aside (briefly) for intense private conversations with new (old) hammer dulcimer),
writing and fine arts... mostly sea and waterscapes in aqua medias ala Herb Maynard... Annual summer visits to Maine's coastline renew my spirit and refresh my soul. Have you lately made the pilgrimage?
I would love to hear from you if you ever have a free moment and would enjoy seeing you once again if you are ever East.
Take care, stay well, and most of all don't age. I am still nineteen...at least at heart and in spirit.

Comments: Michael, I'm glad I stopped by your site. Just found out you'll be playing at Cafe Carpe Friday night and I'm going to try to swing over there for the show.

Loved your music from Bluer than Blue on. Lucked into picking up a copy of Departure and found so many gems on that disc. Then found some of your later -- more country -- stuff on the 1978-95 disc -- and can't wait to hear it live.

I started playing at age 39 (nine years ago) but so much of your stuff is well beyond us intermediates. Though I'm still trying.

It doesn't play very well, but it is the only copy of "Magic Time" I have ever been able to acquire. I am so very interested in getting another copy of the tape that this was on...with True Love, Ponies, Give Me Wings. If there is still such a tape, or preferably a CD, I would love to purchase one. As you could tell, I am not musical but I did know 3 of the songs on the cd.-- Bluer, Moon over shoulder, and Wings. My dad was on the Opry for several years and my sister and brother-in-law are involved in Blue Grass, but the musical genes passed me by. I did enjoy the cd and do want to apologize profusely for not being more current in music. Thanks for the music.

On a serious note, I heard what you went thru. I'm sorry you had to go thru that. I hope you're feeling better. It may not seem like it now, but you're a lucky man to have so many who care. I'm so disappointed that I have to miss your benefit concert on Sunday! I was excited when I first saw the date, but events have transpired such that I remain on crutches (after 12 mos, you'd think I could figure out walking), and now they're talking about putting me back into the chair. As a single woman on crutches, going down to warehouse district is simply not an option -- personal safety has to come first (how do you think I got in this shape in the first place!!)

Have an awesome concert, and know there are many, many more who are present in mind and spirit!

God Bless!

Comments: Hi Michael,

It is April 18 and I have just gotten on your site for the first time in a long time. I was just thinking about you the other day and I hadn't heard anything about your illness and surgery until yesterday. I am saddened to hear of them and I pray that your recovery will continue and you get stronger all the time. Your music has been very dear to me for the last 30 years.Over the 30 years since I was in high school my musical tastes have changed a lot, but your music has been a constant and I enjoy it more all the time. You are so comforting to listen to in our challenging world. And my son who is autistic and can be very frightened and tense, is calmed and steadied when he hears your CDs. Around my last year of high school, 1978 was when I first knew of you and hearing your songs. I have For All You Mad Musicians on LP (Sanskrit) and it is one of my valued possessions; when I play it I feel like you are giving your concert right in my home. I got to see many of your after-Christmas concerts in the late 80s to mid 90s and they were my birthday present since my bday is Dec. 27. I just treasured and enjoyed your concerts. I also enjoyed hearing about your boys growing up every year and I could relate to your stories since my kids were around the same age. Thanks for all the beautiful songs and sharing your talent and your heart with us your faithful fans. I am sorry times have been tough for you, and you will be in my prayers. Thank you too for the blog you write, I appreciate the chance to catch up on what has been going on with you. I look forward to you being here in MN for the state fair this year. God bless you, Michael.

I am home on leave from work after surgery myself and am seeing recuperation from a different angle than a nurse and it does humble one. It takes some time to get the inner courage to take those steps out of the cocoon we have had to live in while recuperating. Being home has allowed me to discover your web site and after years and years of saying to myself "I really want to get to one of his concerts" I am finally planning on doing so when you come to Zumbrota and am hoping to get to the benefit concert. Your music has touched many hearts and seen many through tough times. The time now is to give back to you. Thank you Again. Cindy

Comments: Been a fan forever, since before scoring an interview out at Sanskrit studios for a twin cities high school magazine called "Little Bit", 'way back in the day.

Been a casual guitar player for just as long, learned most of what I know wearing out vinyl, C90 tapes and CD's trying to figure out how the heck you could *do* that. Just did a halfway credible version of "One Mile Apart" with a friend for my church based on the Bluebird recording (and a chart posted on the web by Lisa Aschmann).

Occasionally, not often, loop back to your website, and just read about the bypass surgery. Won't make it to the benefit concert later this month, but glad to hear you'll be playing some in it yourself (and you're touring again, great!). Since I can't make it, I donated a bit at the "friends of" website. I owe you much more.

Did you attend college with Steve Martin and Mason Williams, or did I just imagine that?

My favorite song of your music is "That's That." I'd drive to Nashville to hear you sing it, but it probably would not sound the same as your recording of it. Did Don Potter play the 12 string accompanyment for that arrangement?

Time for me to pull out my copy of your CD again and enjoy it.

In 1991 I was 17 years old. I was abused by my Mother. I had to stay in the basement, I was not allowed out unless she told me to. There was a radio down there and it was always turned on because she did not want me to hear family conversations. It was on WILQ country music, (when country was not cool. haha) It always drove me a little nuts. However, the day came when a friend of mine told me her parents said I could come live with them. I wrote my mother and my stepfather each a letter explaining how we all know that things are not as they should be. There was a good Christian family that would let me come stay with them. Walking up those basement steps to hand over the letters was one of the most difficult things I ever had to do, but I saw no choice, I was either going to die at the hands of my mother, or I would do her the favor and eventually do it myself. As my story goes it was not a smooth, "Sure go live with strangers," but eventually she allowed me to go. I was so excited to find the author of the song that played a VERY important part of my courage and reason to get out of there. My mother must have allowed those words to penetrate her stone heart. The last line of that letter to my Mother, so many years ago was, .....a bird in a cage will forget how to sing, if you love me, give me wings.
I have been flying nonstop since the day she let me go, I'm ainging my own song now and have a husband whom I love and five beautiful children that tickle my soul, my poor Mom missed out on so much joy.
I am planning on writing my story, and hopefully publishing it. Do you mind if I mention Michaels name? The song, at least that paticular line is a very important element to my story.
I would love to hear from you, and hopefully Michael could read this and know because of a few words he put in a song, gave a young girl courage to do what she needed to do to fight to survive. I'm so happy to have tinkered around on the web today while my babies napped and found who sang the song that wove hope and determination into my life. Thank-you Mr. Johnson. Sincerely, Camille Hollenbaugh

Comments: Michael:

New Hampshire's only had electricity since November, and the streets to the market have been blocked of late, by press and secret service wonks, due to something called a "primary" so... we're a little behind the times (he had a what??? a tooth pulled? Podiatric procedure?? Prostate massage?????)

That said - pullll-eeeeze get 100% well, strong, healthy, sagely, effervescent, luminous, hysterically glib, and overtly productive as soon as superhumanly possible.

The Sweet Nothin' Cafe awaits your return, and Wendy sends her love.

Comments: I will have worn out the cd by the time I actually get to see Michael Johnson in concert next month! He is without question the most talented and under appreciated (by mainstream radio) artists alive today! His velvty voice and out of this world guitar playing accompaniment blow me away each time I listen to his music! If you haven't listened (

Comments: Just wondering if Michael ever gets to the colorado area to play anymore. He was one of my favorite artists after the "Give me wings" album, and finding out he was born in my home town makes him that much cooler to me. I heard his song on the radio yesterday on a national countdown recalling his music, and my curiosity got the best of me wondering what he was up to now. Please drop me a line to let me know. Thanks Charlie...
