Moonlit DéjàVu Lyrics

April Fool
By Hugh Prestwood

I'm just a fool for April
There's nothing more to say
Long as I can remember
She's led my heart astray
When I was green as willow
She had me ditchin' school
And even then she tricked me
I'm just an April fool

She tangles dogwood blossoms
Into her yellow hair
She uses the same perfume
The smoky mountains wear
She keeps the flame of summer
'round her neck like a jewel
She breezes in to see me
And I'm an April fool

She entrances me and she dances me
And she flies me like a kite
And I soon forget she's only come to play
Then there comes a day when she will not stay
And I lie awake all night
Hoping next time
April may

When I walked out this morning
April had up and gone
And it was clear as water
She'd only led me on
And it will be next winter
Before my heels will cool
And then I will forgive her
I'm just an April fool

My Favorite Lies
By Clive Gregson

I will change my foolish ways
I won't compromise
I will never waste another day
These are my favorite lies

I will love my fellow man
And help him when he cries
I will always be the best I can
These are my favorite lies

My favorite lies ring in my ears
With a sound that echoes down the years
I welcome them with open arms
They've always worked like lucky charms

There's no need to worry anymore
Everything's all right
There will always be an open door
These are my favorite lies

My favorite lies roll off my tongue
They call too soon and stay too long
When everything is done and said
May the heart be stronger than the head

I will neer cheat again
I will not take sides
I will tell the truth every now and then
These are my favorite lies

One Mile Apart
By Michael Johnson, Karen Taylor-Good & Lisa Aschmann

My name is Mary Frances
And I live in El Paso
In a large house on Mt. Franklin
I have quite a view
I can see the desert
The pecan trees in the valley
Those little shacks in Juarez
I can see them too

My name is Juan Contreras
And from my home in Juarez
I can see El Paso
The houses of the rich
I leave my children sleeping
To earn a few centavos
Selling red pistachios
To the tourists on the bridge

Which side of the river
Did someone flip a coin
It's sad enough to break a river's heart
How can there be so much distance between us
When our houses are one mile apart

My house is Spanish stucco
I have a blue Jacuzzi
Four bedrooms and a fireplace
A swimming pool with heat

My house is brown adobe
I don't have running water
I don't have indoor plumbing
Or pavement on my street

Which side of the river
Did someone flip a coin
It's sad enough to break a river's heart
How can there be so much distance between us
When our houses are one mile apart

Learning How To Love
By Hugh Prestwood

My old man was long gone when I grew up
And my mom she had locked her heart away
You might say I never had a lesson
In the way two people bear their souls from day to day

Come here
Show me how I can
Get this calloused hand
In a velvet glove
I know
I don't have grace
But some day I will
Baby I am still
Learning how to love

I can see by your eyes
That I've hurt you
And I'm not even sure just what I've done
Baby you're just gonna have to lead me
In this beautiful slow dance
That we've only just begun

Come here
Show me how I can
Get this calloused hand
In a velvet glove
I know
I don't have the grace
But some day I will
Baby I am still
Learning how to love

Gee I'm Glad I Worried About That
By W. T. Davidson

I know a book where the hero gets skinned alive
Boiled in oil
Hansel and Gretel are cooked to perfection
And wrapped in foil
And I found myself in the stew
I turned red I turned white I turned blue
And under the covers I shuddered the whole night through

Gee I'm glad I worried about that
It's bound to do me good
Just so I know when they lay me out flat
I've done all the worrying I could
Maybe they'll roast me with speeches and honor me
Maybe they'll toast me and think of me somberly
Maybe I'm just a sad sad sack
Gee ain't I glad that I worried about that

Sooner or later you do take a look at your life
And kiss it goodbye
There are an infinite number
Of hideous ways to die
And though I only get one
I'll imagine an infinite sum
Leaving not one shred of doubt when it's all said and done

Gee I'm glad...

Anthrax and smallpox and big clouds of poison gas
Are coming our way
Best be awake and alive and alert
To the dangers every day
And just so we don't forget
They've color coded the threat
Now that you know you can gasp with your very last breath

Gee I'm glad...

Emilio
By Michael Johnson & Tom Keeton

Emilio lives in an attic
Plays a flamenco guitar
Arpeggios fall out his window
And roll down the fenders of rusted out cars
They harmonize with the sirens
And mix with that racket downstairs
And they wander out into the traffic
Emilio's misguided prayers

The moon is Emilio's mistress
On her there's no turning his back
Some nights she comes to him naked and cold
And some nights she only wears black
When the Fundador flows from his bottle
Somehow there's always a fight
When the moon and the lunatic dance Segurias
Their beautiful music spills into the night
And they dance

In his dreams he can see the abuelas
They offer him wafers and wine
Suspicious Emilio measures
The vino against the divine
But he never has come to believe them
Or accepted their heavenly host
Sabicas and Salvador Dali
The saint and the sinner he prays to the most

Emilio lives in an attic
Plays a flamenco guitar
Arpeggios fall out his window
And roll down the fenders of rusted out cars

Looking For Rainbows (Without an Umbrella)
By Charles Cochran & Roger Cook
Into and outro from "Study No. 3 in A Major, Op. 60° by M. Carcassi

Looking for rainbows
Without an umbrella
Better make sure your heart doesn't follow your eyes
If the colors amaze you
With the promise of sunshine
Forever young
Never too wise

If the child in you prevails
And your common sense still fails you
You're looking for rainbows
Without an umbrella
That's maybe the reason
I'm looking for you

How Do You Know What You Know?
By Hugh Prestwood

Was it when your dad took your little hand
And then you weren't afraid
Or the heart stitched on that cushion
That your great grandmother made
How do you know what you know

Was it when your grade school heart got shattered
By your girl's unkind remark
Or the day they put your dog down
And that night you heard him bark
How do you know what you know

How do you know what you know about love
How do you know what you know
Is it what you'd imagined
Is it what you believed
Does the love that you give
Come from love you receive
How do you know what you know

Was it when your parents told you
They had tried but they were through
And they both said they'd be happier
If they cut your life in two
How do you know what you know

Was it on the day that you were born
And you found your momma's breast
And you though her arms were the whole wide world
And you thought the world was blessed
With this amazing miracle that would forever flow
Was the glory confirmed
Or was your heart deceived
DOes the love that you give
Flow from love you've received
How do you know what you know

SoSo
(parody of the 1946 song "You Make Me Feel So Young")
Music and original words by Josef Myrow and Mack Gordon
Parody lyrics by Michael Johnson

You make me feel so so
You make me feel, well, I don't know
It's not your face that I recall
What I love most of all
I don't remember now, but

Your lips are so blasé
Your way with words, well, "how you say?"
Am I in love or just a rut
So close and yet so what

Love your hair
That lavender rinse looks just great
Pardon me if I stare
But darling did the carpet have to match the drapes?
Say would you like a mint?
I'm hoping you might take the hint
I'm beginning to squint
And I fear that you're in for the kill
You know you almost take the cake
So close to heaven up here
On cloud eight
'Cause you make me feel so
You make me feel so
You make me feel so so

The Day I'm Over You
By Hugh Prestwood

I have been trying hard to quit
In time I know I will
I only dream you up
To keep the night from standing still
Then I practice waking up
From dreams that won't come true
One morning I will wake up to
The day I've over you

Now all I want is to forget
Although it seems a crime
for such a lovely love to fade
Into the mists of time
Some nights it all seems as faint as
Moonlit deja vu
Tonight it seems forever til
The day I'm over you

Oh I don't want to miss you
I don't want time to stand so still
But I must believe this heartbreak is
A canyon time can fill

One fine day farther down the line
A million miles or so
Some holdout corner of my heart
Will finally let you go
Then truth will have become a dream
And dreams will have come true
And rainbows won't recall the rain
The day I'm over you

Kiss Me Goodbye
By Hugh Prestwood

I'm reminded tonight that there must come a day
When I look into your eyes and for the last time
See the love streaming out of your soul
And it's then you will give me a kiss that will seem no less sweet
Than the thousands before it, but it will be different
For it's then you'll kiss me goodbye

You and I cannot know when that last kiss will be
Maybe as quick as the morning
Or maybe some afternoon ages and ages away
But it surely will come, so whenever we happen to kiss
Always kiss me for luck
Always kiss me forever and always
Kiss me goodbye

There's a spell on the evening
There's a moon on the ground
There are whole constellations falling down
And that star you see setting
That's a trick angels play
For that same star is rising worlds away

Wipe the tears from your eyes, it is love's destiny
That the truest of hearts must be broken in two
And then mended before it can fly away home
And until then whenever we happen to kiss
Always kiss me for luck
Always kiss me forever and always
Kiss me goodbye
