I want to thank you for taking the time to sign our "old" record albums last night at Crossings in Zumbrota, MN. Your music has been a big part of our lives. We first saw you at the community college in Rochester, MN when we were dating back in 1973. We have listened to your music, often, over the years, and have never had the opportunity to experience "it or you" close up, as we did last night. Thank you!! We are so sorry to hear about your heart surgery and hope all is going well with your recovery. We played your 2-disc CD on the way home and both sang along all the way! Mark likes to sing along at full voice, and he does a pretty good job, although it gets in the way of hearing your voice!! The intimate setting at Crossroads was so awesome! To be able to experience your guitar playing up so close was unbelievable!!
Thank you, again, for signing our record albums and taking the time to come back home to MinnesOOOta!!
Merry Christmas, Michael, and Happy New Year!!

Source: MJ website Comments: Hi Michael---Just heard "Bluer than Blue" on the radio, and immediatly had to tell my wife how it is that I know of this super singer/guitarist. Do you remember, a long time ago, I put in an exposed aggregate sidewalk for you at your Mtka. home, and you said "now that I've watched you work for a couple days, why don't you come down and watch me work." You gave me 4 (front row) tickets to the Carlton as you were the warmup for Three Dog Night, which had just gotten back together. Well, it looks like, all these years later, we're both still doing the same thing. Sorry to hear about your health issues, but it sounds like your doing fine. I know it doesn't always seem like it, but God never gives us more than we can handle. Well, take care, and I hope to catch one of your performances in the near future. Bob

Over the years I've had good laughs with other Michael Johnson's I've met because we seem to get into the strangest predicaments because of the name we share. I always remind them of you; and, that anyone who listened to the radio then heard your popular tunes, and so people we all respectively knew wouldn't forget us! I really enjoyed singing along with them and now hope to find them on karaoke. (I see availability on a site I look at for that...good deal!)
I was sorry that duet you did with Allison Kruase didn't take off; I enjoyed it.
OK, see you in A2.

I wanted to let you know what a pleasure it is to listen to such a fine singer and guitarist. Im the guy who saw you in the 80s when you opened for the Moody Blues. Looking forward to seeing you perform again. You make every song yourown even if you dint write them and I was incredibly impressed how you moved the audience and the ease at which you could make them laugh and then bring tears to their eyes. I wish you health and healing and many many more years to enjoy singing and playing.

I have always been a fan of yours..I think from the first time I heard one of your songs. I went to Mankato State University; graduated in 1980. I saw you play agt Gustavis Aldolphus College in St. Peter. I recall the show very well 30 years later. Thank you for making such terrific music! And please take care of yourself. I will continue to look for your CD's - I wish the labels would re-release them. I have your Then and Now, and a few old tapes. Would love to trade them in for a CD though! Once upon a time I was driving down the road listening to a country station out of Austin and a song came on the radio about a fellow who was my age, or thereabouts, and still falling in love with his wife (the moon still shines on her shoulder). Well, I had to pull over and have a good cry. I was truly moved. I called the radio station and asked who the artist was and I've never forgotten your name.
The only other song that every moved me like that, was a B.B. King recording, a duet with Gladys Knight, of an old song entitled "Please send me someone to love.

I should have acted on my intuition earlier. I've been thinking about you and want to know (along with Dick Wilson, jut got off the phone with him and asked about you) how you are doing.
How are you?
What is new in your life since surgery?
Are coming to the north country anytime soon?
Anything we can do for you?
My friend Laurie has a family farm near Rochester, sits along Lake Zumbro and if you'd like to come and relax and walk along the tree-lined lane, spend a night or two or more, I'll make the arrangements on this end. Laurie's mom, Lois still lives there, but we go down nearly every weekend to care take and stay in the horse barn that was converted to living quarters about thirty years ago. We're riding Harley's there today with a long-time pastor friend of mine.
Been a tough summer for ol Neon Parrot, little, to no business, had all my broadcast equipment stolen when someone broke into the house while in Seattle, but I'm still on this side of the grass. And that's good. I'm really beginning to walk in the realm of abundance rather than scarcity and amazingly things are falling into place. Maybe I shouldn't be sooo amazed huh? Just signed an agreement to market a beautiful new book about the North Shore by Craig Blacklock.
Gotta run.
Be well,
James

Date: August 07, 2007 at 15:27:04 (CDT) Name: Greg Everett City & State: Conover, WI 54519 Source: I have followed and appreciated your music for years Comments: Hello Michael,
First, I'm sorry to hear about what you will be going through and I wish you the very best. You've heard all the stories so, while any surgery has risks, it's not nearly as risky as when your uncle had the quad.
You probably won't remember me. A few years ago, I attended your show in Cedarburg, WI. We both stepped outside to have a smoke and had a couple of nice chats. I felt we had a lot in common. It was a pleasure talking with you and sharing some similar music stories and "sick" humor. I was born in July of '48 so as I recall, you were considerably older than me...or something. I told you at the time that I too am a singer/songwriter/guitarist and you were kind enough to offer to give a listen to some of my songs. I don't know how it happened, but I lost your card with your phone number and email address and I was too embarrassed to admit this to you so I didn't...and obviously, I didn't try to resume contact...until now...when you're facing heart surgery. Sheesh...what a heartless opportunistic bastard!
Anyway, that said, I have many songs that I've written and a handful of them have solid commercial potential. I have one song (Durango) that's signed with Bronson at Al Jolson Black & White Music there in Nashville.
I'm asking, when you're up to it, would you take a little time to listen to a couple of my songs to see if we might have anything in common? What's posted is intended to be more of a cross section of the styles I can work in more than showing off my most commercial songs as the site where they are posted is our advertising/marketing site and most of our business is geared toward industry. The links are as follows:
If you should have any interest in listening to more, please let me know.
Thanks in advance Michael and I wish for the very best for you with your upcoming ordeal.
Sincerely,
Greg Everett

I'm an adoring fan, have all your CD's, and have attended countless performances. I just logged onto your website to confirm what time you were performing at the TPT anniversary celebration we are planning to attend tomorrow (8/4/07) in St. Paul. I was stunned by the cancelations and very bare-bones performance schedule which is usually quite extensive. Concerned, I found your monologue regarding the bypass surgery coming up. Just wanted you to know that we will be praying for you and look forward to seeing you perform again soon. Keep your sense of humor -- it will definitely help you navigate the difficult road ahead.
Warm Regards,

The Holy Family Class of 1962 is having a reunion! We will have a casual gathering at the Holy Family Church for Mass on Saturday, August 11th and an extended Lunch Buffet on Sunday afternoon, August 12th. All former classmates are invited.
I was looking at the Vista of 1959 and there you are on our freshman cover page. Wow, what a load of books you re holding!
Yep, it has been 49 years since that picture was taken and we have all changed. But, it is fun and worthwhile to reflect back on our roots and those classmates that influenced our development.
I saw where one time you said that you were asked to leave Holy Family, translation, kicked out , because of some infamous violation! Well, I haven t spoken to anyone that remembers such an event, but then again, I haven't spoken to everyone either. I mean, not that it didn t happen, but :0)
Certainly, most of us were sorry to have you and others depart for North High School and most of us had no idea why. Personally, I always thought you left because they had gymnastics and that was your sport!
Anyway, Cindy Persichette asked in her trivia questions, just how many professional musicians we had in our class. It is an interesting question and it is more than any of us could have imagined would come from such a relatively small group of students.
The Reunion should be a nice gathering and all of your former classmates would enjoy seeing you.
Bob DeAndrea has set up a web page with details and other items of interest at: hfclassof62.info
Everyone would love to see you, Michael.

Date: May 22, 2007 at 00:45:27 (CDT) Name: Dan N. City & State: Hibbing, MN Source: You referenced it in song-writing class Comments: Michael,
This is a long-overdue thanks for your class and concert in Hibbing. I enjoyed sharing my song, "A Little at a Time" with you. Reading "Perseverance" just reminded me that the main reason I write is because I have to, for the love the craft. I do not believe I will be one of the few that see their songs go into production (I do not have the perseverance for it). If not for the love of the music itself, the writing would therefore be very frustrating. But the music is its own reward. If others like it, it is very gratifying. But if I like it, it is wonderful, even if I am the only one holding that opinion.
Again, thanks for visiting Hibbing.

Date: April 21, 2007 at 00:38:34 (CDT) Name: Gary Lynn Burt City & State: Marble, Minnesota Source: looked on the web for "mbjblue.com" Comments: Hi Michael.
I've thought of you as a friend of mine since we started talking back in the Jericho Harp days. I gave you my Cd in the spirit of that feeling I had. I am hoping now that I didn't presume too much, as i certainly didn't mean to impose myself on you. It just didn't occur to me that you and I might not still be friends when I gave you the CD.
After hearing your concert, and reading your article on "Perseverence" I think the idea I had that we're still friends is even more true now. Of course, the preceding ideas are just words. However, if you have the time and desire to listen, I'm hoping the songs on my CD will convince you that we are playing on the same team, if not quite the same ball parks, . (You might like "Small Flame Burning" and "Take My Hand." Jim Thomas was thinking of doing "Take My Hand" when he and Tom were still together. Of course, they both got "real" jobs, and I'm the one still writing. And my dad still asks me when I'm going to get a "real" job?)
I know I perservere in many of the same ways you do. I was glad i brought the song I did to the class in Hibbing, as you and some of the other class members helped me identify both the problems with the song, and the goal I was going for in the song. Getting an objective point of view is sometimes necessary for me, as I sometimes am just too close to the songs, though that is probably not as true as it used to be.
I don't know if you're familiar with the writings of Hugh Prather, but one thing he wrote seems connected to your article on perserverence. "He wrote, "Given the alternatives we (have learned to) allow ourselves, we always do what we want." When we become aware of that fact, discipline ceases to be a problem.
When I saw you perform in Hibbing, I saw a person who I thought was trying to find his way back to his path, and who was very close to succeeding. It was as if a lot of things have conspired to take you away from that direction, as you mentioned in the article on perserverence. It felt like you were going in the right direction.
I wanted to tell all these things in Hibbing, but you were preoccupied. To me, that was also what you were talking about in "perserverence." You have been "preoccupied" in the past, with things that didn't really connect with the heart and soul of who you are. Been there - done that. Still go there too many times. Survival demands a lot of me, but probably less than what I give it. Sometimes, as Bob Franke put it, we just have to tell the internal critic to shut up and go back to it's corner.
Anyway, I wanted to let you know that I was glad to touch base with you again after such a long time of not seeing or speaking with you, and very glad to know that the "seeker" is still in there seeking. I know that one very well. I can never fully rest with the seeker still affecting me. If we end up in the same nursing home, and we're not both alzheimer's patients, it could lead to interesting times. Take care... gb

I "caught up with you" when you recorded Wings with Don. He has always been my "idol", as I lived near his Music Room for years and always thought I would end up with him, as our lives had run a rather parallel course for some years, divorce, remarriage, "screwed up" years, etc. However, I now know that I was just yearning to be a musician in parallel with all of you in love with music!!! I now live in WA and love the Columbia River Gorge with such passion! Painting in my studio and watching the sunshine days pass by with great leisure!
I just wanted you to know how much your songs have meant to me throughout my 67 years of life! You brought me through my years of watching my dad die with your son Ponies! It gave me such courage to listen to the lyrics. The Wings recording was meaningful for me, as I gave Don an airplane as a Xmas present once, knowing intuitively that had needed to leave Rochester for more fertile fields. Alas, he did and met the Judds!
A history lesson in itself.
I congratulate you for living your dream, staying under the radar with your celebrity and enjoying the pleasures that God gave you. You represent the best of the best! Thanks for your serenity throughout the years. My hat is off to you, Michael.
I only wish we could have known each other, as we are on the same "page" with the meaning of life and simplicity

Will try this again after many years...
Era of your music: That's That
When: 1988/89 (hmmm???)
Where: A pokey little town north of Tucson called Catalina. In a hick bar called The Lariat (which for some reason would get fairly big names in to perform.)
Met you there, loved your music. Then met you again in Scottsdale, at another bar type situation, but you were playing solo.
Later...I moved to PA. Saw you play in Baltimore, MD (at a mall event, which you detested) and spent some time at the Inner Harbor.
Since then...took your advice and ditched the bum I was involved with, married a great guy and became the homeschooling mother of two fabulous kids. Then I moved back to said pokey town of Catalina. Who knew?
Wishing: You would make your way to Arizona as I would love to hear you perform in person again. Your voice is beautiful. Be in touch if memory serves you...
Many blessings to you and yours,
Jaimie

It's been a while since we "howdied" - last year at Manitou Springs, if memory serves.
You were kind enough sometime back to send me the lyrics for "You Make Me Feel So-So". I know at that time you had not recorded it. I've recently started doing a radio show, a half hour slot featuring humorous music from the "folk era". While not exactly FROM that era, I think "...So-So" would be a scream to play. Is there any way to access that song? Do you have it available on any sound files?
The show is live at 5:30 AM on Tuesdays, Mountain Time. (I'm not entirely certain that I'M alive at that hour, but......). We're calling it "Folk Era Lite", and it'll stream on the station's website, www.krfcfm.org.
If there's any shot at getting "...So-So", please let me know. It'd be perfect.
Hope to see you in Manitou again.
Thanks,
Zach Kaplan

It's a beautiful song, and it is a shame that the world can't share in knnowing exactly how to play it. My date was so tired driving home that he had to have all the windows open on the drive back to the U of M campus..we were both elementary education students. Thanks for the memories!

Dear Michael:
I have just read Thoughts on Perseverance and am now sitting here in tears, hoping I do not short out my keyboard! Okay, so I am how many years behind the curve? Your points hit home so hard, sort of like the kiss of a wet fist after a neatly thrown right cross. Here comes the explanation:
When last we met, it was about 1974. I was engaged to be married to a nice Jewish American Princess (herein, referred to as JAP!) From Septmeber until the end of the year, wedding was all I did! So, I was temporarily lost to the Lincoln Ave regulars with theexception of occasional sneak out nights. Performing ended after marriage except at home, which was cool. The JAP and I would occasionally sing together and even appeared as a duo for a while. What followed was the wonderlust that the musicina feels when the chains of relationship titghten around one's neck and musical life is curtailed.
When the opportunity to record with The Redhead band surfaced in 1975-76, I jumped. This immediately started the dwonhill trek into separation in 1978 and divorce in 1980, whereupon I remarried immediately. This too ended in divorce after 2 1/2 years of producing sound for concerts and wrking for Guitar Center as a salesman and manager. Never home so 2nd wife took to sleeping with her boss and screwing up HIS family as well. Next victim---Diane, aged 28 to my 40 when we met. She knew of my mucial activites and initially was okay with it. However, she wanted something more and I had to choose between not knowing when the next date was and having a permanent job and a relationship with someone I really cared about. I chose the latter.. Operative word CHOICE.
I lost Diane on 12/31/04 to a pulmonary embolism---sudden and in 95% of occurences, fatal. She was the light of my life. However, I found out that when one light extinguishes, it does not take long for another to ignite. In this case, it was an old "flame", but not really aperson. Well, maybe itwas a person---Tom Dundee, to be exact. He trekked out from Chicago in an ice storm to give me personal support at a wake that should never have taken place. HAVIng a friend like Tom there gave me added strength to get through those hours and days. He insited tha Icome to a conert he was doing that Saturday night. When I went, it was like a cathartic injection of spirit. Since then, I have been determined to rekindle my solo performance career. n the 20 years that Di and I were together, I hardly picked up my guitar. It suffered as much as I did, needing a great deal of repair AND a neck reset.
As I am sure you are aware of, we have suffered losses in the community. Steve Godman, Mike Jordan adn most recently Fred Holstein and Ray Nordstrand. Each of these deaths struck me quite heavily, but do not compare to the loss of one's life partner. Di was a "disco girl", not at all interested in the folk community. Yet she loved folks like Tom and Jim Post, Reilley and Maloney from the West Coast, and even tolerated Fred and Earl! She tried to protect me from upsetting episodes fo these types of events. I miss her terribly. But, with her passing, with he extinguishing of her light, the glow fo the music returned, my old flame.
Since February, 2005, I have been playing all kinds of music, from traditonal folk, contemporary folk, singer/songwriter products, classic country, contemporary country, even some songs from musical productions that I have appeared in. I have even gone so far as to find some pop tunes that are classics---Sittin on the Dock of the Bay, for instance. In the summer of 2005, I started hitting the open stages to get my legs back. I have done lots of that recently.
Most recent was last night at the Old Town School of FOlk (Fake) Music. If you remember what it was like, you will not recognize. (More on that another time) It was a true kick to stand on their stage and perform "On the Road" for the first time in 33 years. As I have been noticing, certain songs just seem to flow out of me---this was one of them. It was an uniquely special moment for me.
If it wasn't for the perseverance, not only of purpose, but also of spirit, I would probably have killed myself already. As you pointed out, quitting is not an option. I, too, will go out in a blaze of glory, playing my guitar as hard as I can while drawing my last breath. I have missed the muse long enough. And now, I have confirmation that I am right---so fucking unbelievably right, in the choice to come back, as it were. Agin, theoperative word here is CHOICE! Thank you for making the choice more than just obvious.
And as for Bubba, well to quote the great Chicago philospher, Earl J. J. Pionke, "Fuck 'em! Get the money!"
Much love to you, Michael, and thanks for the support!
Your old friend,
Norm "Maddawg" Siegel

About 15 years ago, I spoke w/you about performing at my wedding! Your nephew, Chris, was an intern in audiology at the time here in Colorado. He put me in touch with you, but alas, you had a commitment in Switzerland (?) I believe.
At any rate, have you ever had the chance to play with keyboardist John Jarvis? He's a fellow Nashville-based artist with what seems to be a similar musical sensibility. I could imagine a great musical synergy between the two of you.
Love to know if a Colorado date is within the realm of possibility.
Thanks,
D.O.

The albums eventually wore out and I managed to replace them a few years ago. Two songs..Drops of Water and 25 Words Or Less still get played regulary as they always managed to cheer me up when I need to. My daughter who is 15 also loves 25 words, and often asks me to play it. I wish I could get these albums on CD or MP3 as I only have a vinyl and tape version. Any chance that these will be released on CD? Also, any change of you coming to England to play...now that would be something!! Recently Stephen Bishop cam to England to do two gigs and I was unable to get there. I think you know Stephen.
Anyway I'll keep playing your songs and thanks for the memories!!

I've been a fan for years, saw you play twice here in Washington at County Fairs (remember opening for I think it was The Gatlin Brothers??) Anyway, I'm also a fan of Jon Pousette-Dart and have been following what he's been doing recently. I noticed that he is doing some shows as a host of some songwriters and I saw Hugh Prestwood's name as one of the writers. I knew that you did several of his tunes, so looked up your site and here I am. I have your "Very Best Of..." in my truck, my 3 girls are all somewhat fans too, although as I rememeber reading an essay of yours years ago, they prefer music from bands called things like "The Snot Rockets"....! Anyway, just a hello and do you have any plans to come to the Northwest? Fishing is good up here you know (Jon has told me that he will get up here and go some day). I'll keep an eye on your schedule, would love to see you perform again sometime. Great to see you are keeping busy.

My mother's name maiden was Mershon and my Aunt Rose was Terry's blood relative. Take care. Just a trip back in time, I've always wondered what happened to Jan.

You just blew me away!! It was at least 10 or even 15 years ago, and I remember it like it was yesterday. Being a guitarist and performer myself, I was just taken back by your work, and have decided to go back to work (after 5 years of a solo gig with my 12-string, 5 more years with a nightclub band, 5 more years of weddings, and a 15 year vacation!, but more importantly, I'm going to feature your work. Not enough people on this earth have even heard of you, and they need to feel what went into your Dedication of the love a man can have for a women in "The moon is still over her shoulders" and "Give me wings" . I just hope when I present them to a audiance, I will do them justice. I've been a romantic all of my 54 years, and your songs just hit the spot. I'm hoping that you'll perform somewhere I can get to without flying to North Dakota, but even if I had to it would be worth it. Thank you so much for your tremendous work and being an inspiration for guitar players everywhere. Clyde Newman

Small college - about 600 people - first year boys had been admitted. Small enough that when the concert was over, some of us went back stage to talk with him. It made me homesick when he said he was from Minnesota, as I was, too. In fact, he lived in Minnetonka not far from relatives. I bought two of his albums, which I ended up having to sell to a second-high store in 1985, to pay bills. Anyway, I was going through some things and found some information and thought I'd see if he was still around. Maybe I'll see him at SpamFest!

Date: May 18, 2005 at 15:30:25 (CDT) Name: Anne City & State: Arlington Heights, IL Source: my brother Comments: Just ordered a couple of CDs off your website -- after being re-introduced to your music last fall when I saw you were going to be in my area. I was a fan back in my college days, but had not kept up with your career. Years have passed and I thought I'd share a recent reaction I had to "Then & Now." I used to listen to "I'll Always Love You" dreaming of my current love at the time. Now, however, it's NOT romantic love I'm thinking of -- instead it's my 19 year old son, who has done just about EVERYTHING a teen can do to drive a wedge in the mother/son relationship. He's home for the summer, (after having flunked two classes out of four!), being irresponsible, drinking, etc., and I was just about ready to ship him out. And then I heard "I'll Always Love You" and realized if I gave up on him, that "I'd really miss him after all." Love is indeed a mystery! This kid who has driven me away and hurt me so deeply, has truly broken my heart. Yet......"I'll Aways Love You" actually helped change my perspective. My love for him is still there, and if he ever changes his mind about his destructive lifestyle, I'll be there with open arms. Thanks for helping me realize that. And I thought you'd get a kick out of the fact that your music reaches folks in "multi-purpose" ways!

After a hard day or anytime we wanted to mellow-out we had MJ playing in the bunkhouse. At a rough time in my life MJ's music and lyrics got me over the hump. I can still sing a mean MJ tune in the shower, especially if I want my teenage kids to leave me in peace. I thought i'd never be able to replace my early albums and I'm thrilled to have them on the way to me. MJ, keep touring. I really want to see another show before I kick the bucket.

I am hopping you remember meeting her and her husband (Ginene Swanson and John Strachan) on Bainbridge Island, Wa. They came and seen your concert (sometime in the 80's) when you did the concert on Bainbridge Island and they got a chance to visit with you and they invited you to their home. You went with them and sang with my sister and they had a great time with you.
At this time in her life, Ginene has reneal cell cancer. The Dr. had given her 4 months to live back in 2003, she has beat all odds against this beast, but she is still fighting. Her husband is having a benifit dinner cruise in Seattle on April 1. I know this is short notice but I have been trying to think of people she hasn't seen in along time that she would love to see and your name came to mind. I think she would love to see you again, if you can make it that would be great, if not than maybe just a note to her would cheer her too.
You can check it out on her web site at www.ginene.com or you can call her at 206-780-5181 or you can call me if you want to know more. 651-674-0348. Thanks, Ginene's sister Sandy

I would really like to get in touch with you. We are going to be in the mid west for a week over the 4th of July and we might come to Nashville. If you're there, I would really like to see you. But if I can't find you, it will be difficult to meet up.

I have followed your work since the mid-70's and you remain one of my very favorite performers. From the beginning I have been as interested in your guitar technique as in the songs themselves and after all this time finally get to see you perform at Jimbo's on Tuesday. My wife and I are flying in from California for the evening and will be joined by my best friend Bill, also an admirer, and his wife who will be driving across Colorado. I have no idea what your playlist will be, but it would be wonderful if "There is a Breeze" was on it...if you're up for it. However, if you're not, no worries. Whatever song you're playing, I'll be delighted. See you Tuesday - Steve

My name is Michael Smith and I am currently doing research for a book on Billboard's Hot 100 Hits of the 80's. I would be interested to learn the background story of the song "You Can Call Me Blue", as well as what it was like for you as an artist in the music industry during the 1980's.
It would be a pleasure and honor to hear back from you. Your contribution to music helped to make the 1980's my favorite decade, one that is full of wonderful memories for me. I thank you for your time and welcome your participation in this project.
And good news! I have just equipped myself with a new speakerphone and recording setup so that I can better handle phone interviews, which have been much requested by artists I have contacted thus far.
Please let me know when is a good time to schedule a phone interview or if you would rather communicate by e-mail. My contact info is as follows:

until I was looking for your song The Moon is Still Over Her Shoulder
on Morpheus -cause I have looked other places and not knowing the artists name is a bit of a handicap! Anyway I found it and then searched and found this site. I'm the sort who doesn't care how "famous" someone is or isn't and I tend to forget the "stars", but their work, if it touches me stays with me. Maybe that's what its all about. Several years ago I saw you at a concert where you were playing with someone I don't remember at all, but you sang many things I loved and I tried to buy an album that night, lines were insane and my partner wasn't interested in waiting forever. After that it got pushed aside, I forgot your name ( i have a name problem anyway) and I have looked sporadically since. Like many other great country artists we no longer hear you on the radio, but I wanted you to know that there are people who remember your music although I downloaded the song, I will buy a CD as soon as I can afford one again- three months of my husband being out of work kind of limits the disposable income. Thank you for your beautiful work - regardless of airtime and spots on CMT, keep playing, keep singing we need all of the music we can get in this crazy world.

Great concert at the Hopkins Center for the Performing Arts on Dec. 26, 2004! I especially enjoyed hearing "Bristlecone Pine".
I recently retired after teaching school in Hopkins for 35 years. One of my retirement gifts was a framed photo taken by a friend/artist of a rugged tree growing along the north shore area of Minnesota.
It now sits above our fireplace in the livingroom, with a copy of the "Bristlecone Pine" lyrics next to it.
When I saw the photo, I immediately thought of your song, and how it connected to my lifetime of teaching.
Thanks for the inspiration!
Keep singing, playing, and writing.
Sincerely, Kathy Hering

Thanks for those. They're important. And true. That's a rare commodity in the music mines; someone who will speak the truth to you. Not that I'm whining, most people are probably speaking the truth as they see it.
Anyway, thanks. That's about it, really. For the music of course, but also for the spirit behind it. And for reminding the rest of us minstreling up the miles with a guitar in one hand and a weatherbeaten notebook in the other that the first thing you better decide if you're going to commit to this religion is which god you're gonna get up and pray to each day. There are, of course, several from which to choose.
There have been multiple times over the past years that I've thought about "quitting" as you put it, and more than a few of those times, it's been a quick re-read through the Book of Johnson (some printe-off and posted on the studio wall copies of your articles) that have moved me to sit my whiny ass back down at the mixer, or pick up the phone one more time to bug that club owner, or just try to work out that annoying bridge that isn't moving the song forward.
Anyway, thanks.

I think I wore out my copies of your first two albums trying to figure out how to play half the tracks!
I'm sure you've heard it many times over the years, but your music is enormously evocative. Your music and your playing style was a revelation for a kid trying to figure out if there was something more to musical life than rock and roll. I really appreciate it. It broadened the horizon of what was cool for all of us wannabe guitarists working those West Bank dives.
I tracked your website down to see if I could get your early albums on compact disc. I just bought them -- thanks! I couldn't find them anywhere else. Hope all is going well and that you are heading east at some point to a venue in the DC area.
Again, thanks for the music!

I am working on a magazine article about helping children deal with stage fright and came across your helpful advice on your site. Would you be available (sometime after the first of the year) for a short interview (either by phone or email) at your convenience on children and stage fright? Currently, I am pitching the idea to magazines. As soon as an editor agreed, I'd do the interviews then. I'd like to be able to say in the pitch who has agreed to talk to me. Thank you for any help you can provide -- I know you're very busy.

First saw him in the late 70's at one of the December concerts in Minneapolis. I've seen Hendrix, Kotke, Rankin, Loggins, Messina, Feliciano, "the Great Guitars," Matheny . . . a whole host of guitarists (and singers). And none measures up to Michael Johnson's playing. What a unique treat to experience his music in a small and intimate venue. He deserves better outlets, as an artist, but the gift he gave to those of us in the audience last night was truely rare. I was with a friend who saw MJ even earlier in his career than did I; a friend who once shared a beer with him after a concernt in MN. We both hope you stay well and that the work continues to feed both your passion and contentment.

Date: September 30, 2004 at 20:49:33 (CDT) Name: dennis bradley City & State: shoreview, MN but met Michael in Grand Marais, MN Source: after unplugged for North house folkschool benefit bought cd Comments: Dear Michael, so great to hear you in person and chat--however briefly--at the reception in Betsy Bowen's gallery after the Unplugged Concert in Grand Marais, MN. I'm kind of a gab and hesitate to engage artists like yourself, Bernie Leadon, John Veznor etc in extended conversation--suspect youve heard all this and more before. Nevertheless, after listening to your "Then and now" I must reiterate what I said at Betsy's --you're not just an entertainer with a great voice and a masterful guitar. Not that those assets wouldnt be sufficient for most. Your music has something to say of importance. I suppose I should have guessed that you might be a bit more of a deeper thinker than the average bloke from your willingness to support NH folk school.
I found NH by accident in 95--I was a speaker in Grand Marais for a conference sponsored by the international joint commission. The IJC is a US Canada group that considers all sorts of matters affecting the Great Lakes which we share. I had just retired from the Forest Service as a research forester/economist/sociologist and I was talking about something called Ecological Economics. Hardly mainstream thinking but an important new perspective I believe. Regardless, I found NH walking to the meeting--and I've been caught up in their activities ever since. I volunteered at first, building the buildings, the Mackinaw boat etc and finally teaching this summer.
If I have a disappointment in your website, its the absence of the lyrics for your great humorous knockoffs like--You make me feel so, so. Any chance of finding this stuff on your site in the future.
Also, I hope you'll be coming back to Grand Marais next summer. And if you do perhaps we can chat again. If your interested, Mark Hansen, Tom Healy NH founders and other fun-loving blokes try to put our love of adventure and nature in practice by hitting the road, primarily in Canada just across the border to sail or canoe or whatever to experience nature and great conservation/food/and (perish the thought for recovering alcoholics) a great scotch. Would you like to join us?? I'm so glad to have met and listened to you.
My wife Linda and I sing a few songs for friends in harmony--0ld time stuff like "tell me why". Bluer than Blue or the Beatles' Michelle force me to sing over the top in harmony every time I hear them--not a pretty sight perhaps but what can I say....

Luckily, I did not give up, and found this site. Such a wealth of information (and sources for CDs)
Years ago I wrote Michael when he was located in Nashville (I think someone by the name of Bowles was manager?) and asked about the song Sailing w/o a Sail, and it was unavailable at that time, but Michael was so kind and sent me a cassette with that song on it (this was pre-CD time). I was so impressed with this act of kindness and I have and play that cassette (and another cassette where I recorded just that song over and over) to this day. I still think it is one of the most romantic songs written. I am so happy to have found this website. Thanks.

To say I was surprised to receive an E Mail back from you is the understatement of the year!
I have been reading your website information and it has confirmed what I already thought. That you are a regular guy who just happens to be a musical genius (in my opinion at least). I have just purchased your albums "Aint dis da Life" and "For all you mad musicians". I was not aware that you had covered the John Martyn song "may you never" (John is also Scottish by the way).He wrote it as a lullaby for his kids I believe. It has wonderful sentiment for me being the dad to a nine year old boy. As you say on your website covers are a good thing provided they are done with style. I don't know if you know much about John but there was a recent television documentary on over here about his musical life and it has been a colourful one to say the least! He lives in Ireland now and has been very ill recently with the result that he has had to have a leg amputated. He has vowed to keep touring while he still can.Whilst on the subject of other artists my big influencers over the years have been: Michael Macdonald, John Martyn, You, Alfie Zappacosta, Cat Stevens, James Taylor, Alison Krauss, Celine Dion, Elton John, Art Garfunkell, Enya, Bread, Etc Etc and of course The Beatles.
I hope you don't mind but I have forwarded your E Mail to Dougie Maclean (Dougies website details attached) as he is a "big hitter" over here on the folk music scene. As you possibly know he is a big pal of Cathy Mattea (sorry about the spelling) and has collaborated with her on many occasions.
Have you ever heard of Celtic connections? I enclose the web details as this might be a perfect excuse for you to visit Scotland in the future. Many of your peers have visited this music festival over the years and have returned again and again.

in my mind as a classic 70`s love song.I know Sawyer Brown did a

"sound" of you actually being there with the distress of a "play-

I and an ever increasing number of my freinds and family have enjoyed your music since 1978 when by chance one of your records was played on BBC Radio 2.
Throughout the years since i have often turned to your songs and have found new meanings for me depending on the challenges at the time, Deaths of parents, lost loves etc, etc.
Thanks to the internet i have now bought almost all of your albums on CD mostly from the USA and Japan. For some reason not many people in Britain know about you or your majestic songs. (I have managed to get your records played a couple of times on the BBC and local radio but not nearly enough is heard of you over here. Will you ever concider touring here (Particuarly Scotland). We have a great history of folk music (Dougie Mclean lives near here and owns a great pub where improvisation and spontaneus instrumental playing is encouraged).
If you don't come here i may have to visit the USA to see one of your concerts sometime. I am 44 years old and work in Sales management so hopefully a bonus will come at the right time.
Kindest Regards.

I can understand our town doesn't probably net much but we are appreciative. You will allways be a favorite singer/performer. Thanks You have tons more talent than most out there today Michael. Keep making music. The Rogers family

Source: By chance Comments: After spending years searching for 'There is a Breeze' and 'Mad Musicians,' I have finally found and placed my order for the set. I understand they will arrive within days and I am pleased in no small measure.
Michael, I don't know if you read these things, and I'm certain you don't recall this episode, but I interviewed you about 30 years ago as a young radio news hound after a concert you gave at the University of Minnesota/Morris - I was working at a little radio station in Montevideo at the time. You were gracious and accomodating, and even autographed my 'Breeze' album, which I still have, albeit absent a needle for my long-retired turntable. The fate of my 'Mad Musicians' LP is unknown - it was swipted by a DJ at a radio station in Richmond, Virginia back in the mid-80s.
The chance to hear those songs again after so many years - Happier Days, Cain's Blood, Love and Sex, Old Folks (which chokes me up just thinking about it), On the Road, Gypsey in the Photograph, I could go on and on - is simply smashing and I feel like a kid waiting for the mailman to bring me the thing I ordered from the back of a comic book. But there's another, more important reason I'm greatly anticipating the arrival of these albums.
I went to high school during the early and mid-1970s in Minnetonka (Go Skippers!) and your music played a part during my formative years. In a small way, these two albums and the messages in your music helped guide me toward adulthood. Some would say I turned out okay.
Today, I have two teenaged daughters of my own - 16 and 19 - and I want them to hear Michael Johnson the way I did. In my mind, it's valuable for them - dare I say important - to hear the music and, God willing, absorb some of the messages contained in that music.
I am unable to imagine the musician's life, but I cannot believe there have not been one or two moments in which you worried your performances were little more than some gig in some tavern or beer joint between Duluth and Chicago. Please know your performances meant so much more, and made a difference, to this now slightly overweight, middle-aged guy. You and your music matter.
I hope this finds you as well and happy and content as I.
With very best wishes and warmest regards,
Scott Hogenson

What a thrill for me on May 19, 2004 at Mickey's Diner in St. Paul, Minnesota. To see you having lunch there at the same time my boyfriend and I were.
I kept looking over at your booth, wondering "who is he?" I work with the public and recognize MANY people about town. I live in Minneapolis, but go to St Paul now and then. After a few minutes, I had said to my boyfriend, "That's Michael Johnson!" Didn't know (or care, ha) who the lady was. I silently freaked out!!
I'm so glad I had enough nerve to go over and say hello to you. I had no choice but to walk right by you, anyway, so I got up the nerve. I have most of your albums and some on CD. You once signed all of them for me at the Minnesota State Fair, too.
Thanks for being so friendly when I was just a stranger to you, but you not to me.
Made my year!!

Anyway, nice to know you're still playing. I've never heard a better acoustic guitarist. I still have your first two LP's! I plan on purchasing your CD's so I can listen to you again! I drove vigorously to attend as many as I could. Great guitar playing and singing. I prefer the early stuff. Glad to find the CDs of the early stuff available.

I was doing a google search for a relative of mine and up popped a reference to my entry in your guestbook. March 15th of '98! Can it have been that long ago? Things have changed a lot since then including my views on the Then and Now album. At the time I was disappointed with the newer versions of the old songs, but since then have come to enjoy them too. No sooner had I gotten to the site then I remembered I had just bought the Classic Masters CD yesterday and hadn't opened it yet. So now I've got the old songs in their original versions playing, and though I can never go back to being younger and more hopeful, go back to a time when skies were bluer and the air smelled sweeter and it seemed like I had all the time in the world, I can at least go back in my mind and remember it a little clearer than I did yesterday.
I've always played a game with myself, making up mental lists of those precious things I'd want with me if I were stuck on a deserted island for the rest of my life. It would of course be an island with some power and a stereo system, and in the old days i could only take one album or ten songs, each by a different artist, nowadays it's a CD of 20. LOL In either case, one of those songs was always the original version of This Night Won't Last Forever. Well, it's playing now and reminding me of lost loves and lost opportunities and the hope for a brighter tomorrow I needed back then.
Thanks for all the memories and all the great songs from long ago!

I've been deeply touched by your music since 1975, when I instrumental in getting our concert organizer at the University of Maine Orono to get you out there. The auditorium had a capacity of 800, and about 30 people showed up for the concert, but your music sparked enough feeling in those 30 people to saturate that big space. Very memorable.
And thank you for re-releasing your early works on CD.
What would it take to get you to the Boston area?
Cheers,

They loved it . I had sung "Rooty Toot Toot", "On the Road" and "You've Got to be Taught" to her as she grew up. When vinyl became vogue, she dug through my records and found "There is a Breeze". She taught herself guitar to learn the songs on that LP. She turned all her girlfriends on to it. So, now once again, you have a teenage fan base at Wayzata High school. Just what you needed, right? We didn't know about your site and could only find a copy of "There is a Breeze" on CD as an import from Japan. Thanks for referencing mjblue at your concert. Purchased "The Early Albums" and now these girls think the songs from "Mad Musicians" are way cool. Thanks for the music. I don't know if you recognize the name. I was a friend of Tab Laven's and used to teach guitar at the Guitar Store in Wayzata in '73 and'74. By the way, the Orchestra Hall performance was great. Thanks.

They asked Stace to sing and he played guitar and sang Cain's Blood and On the Road and others. It was a calm evening, and sound carries across water a long way. After he was done singing, they could hear applause across the lake from another campsite. It was awesome! I have the best of both. My husband singing your songs to me. Only one problem, no sheet music. Where can I get the music for your songs? Right now, he's trying to guess at the chords in the songs. Please help! Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Kate
